6、wthatwhatdistinguishesstylisticsfromliterarycriticismontheonehandandlinguisticsontheotheristhatitisessentiallyameansoflinkingthetwo”(1975:3).leechholdsasimilarview.hedefinesstylisticsasthe“studyoftheuseoflanguageinliterature”(1969:1)andconsidersstylisticsa“meeting-groundoflinguisticsandliterarystudy
7、1969:2).fromwhatwiddowsonandleechsay,wecanseethatstylisticsisanareaofstudythatstraddlestwodisciplines:literarycriticismandlinguistics.ittakesliterarydiscourse(text)asitsobjectofstudyanduseslinguisticsasameanstothatend.stylisticanalysisisgenerallyconcernedwiththeuniquenessofatext;thatis,whatitistha
8、tispeculiartotheusesoflanguageinaliterarytextfordeliveringthemessage.thisnaturallyinvolvescomparisonsofthelanguageofthetextwiththatusedinconventionaltypesofdiscourse.stylisticiansmayalsowishtocharacterizethestyleofaliterarytextbysystematicallycomparingthelanguageusesinthattextwiththoseinanother.hall

10、hus,wemayconcludethatstylisticanalysisisanactivitythatishighlycomparativeinnature.2.astylisticanalysisofthespeech(ananalysisofsomeofthestylisticdevicesusedinthespeech. martinlutherking"sspeechofaugust28,1963iswidelyregardedasoneofthemostpowerfuleverdeliveredintheunitedstates.althoughthisaddres
11、swasdeliveredorally,itwasreadfromawrittentextcomposedwithgreatcare.itisanexampleofformalenglishwithaconvincingstyle.herearesomeofthestylisticdevices(whichmaybeconsideredtraditionallyasrhetoricaldevices)usedbydrkingtoinspireandpersuade.2.1repetitionthroughoutthespeech,dr.kingrepeatswordsandsentence.t
12、hisisaveryoutstandingfeatureinthisspeechcalledrepetition.itbelongstothestylisticdeviceofsyntacticover-regularity.thetermrepetitionisrestrictedtomeanthecaseofexactcopyingofacertainpreviousunitinatextsuchasaword,phraseorevenasentence(leech,1969),becausealltheover-regularfeaturesinliteratureareinsomese
13、nserepetitious.usedinspeech,repetitionnotonlymakesiteasyfortheaudiencetofollowwhatthespeakerissaying,butalsogivesastrongrhythmicqualitytothespeechandmakesitmorememorable.inparagraphs8through16,forexample,kingusesthewords“ihaveadream”ninetimes.thisrepetitionhelpstoachievethefunctionofcoherenceindisco
14、urseandthefunctionofreinforcementinmoodandemotion,expressingthespeaker"sstrongemotionoflongingforfreedom,justice,righteousnessandamuchmoreunitednationofallofgod"schildren. ifwestudythewholespeechmorecarefully,itiseasyforustofindmanyotherexamplesofrepetitionused.(1)butonehundredyearslater,wemus
15、tfacethetragicfactthatthenegroisstillnotfree.onehundredyearslater,thelifeofthenegro(2)isstillsadlycrippledbythemanaclesofsegregationandthechainsofdiscrimination.onehundredyearslater,thenegrolivesonalonelyislandofpovertyinthemidstofavastoceanofmaterialprosperity.onehundredyearslater,thenegroisstillla

19、arallelismisanothersyntacticover-regularity.itmeansexactrepetitioninequivalentpositions.itdiffersfromsimplerepetitioninthattheidentitydoesnotextendtoabsoluteduplication,it“requiressomevariablefeatureofthepattern-somecontrastingelementswhichare"parallel"withrespecttotheirpositioninthepattern”(leech,1

37、sed.secondly,itshouldbeemotionalsoastobeconvincing,becausethespeakershouldfacetheaudiencedirectlyandhiswordsshouldnotonlybeorderlyandinformativebutalsobeexpressiveandinspiring.therefore,thestylisticdevicessuchassimilesandmetaphorsareofteninvolved.finally,inmanycases,written-conversationalstyleisusua
