None of us thought Ethan could do it, but he did quite well. His mom paid him $200. He went out and bought a TV, the biggest he could find.

Teachers say we are rewarding kids for doing what they should be doing of their own will. Psychologists warn that money can actually make kids worse by making the act of learning cheap. The debate has become a typical battle over why our kids are not learning at the rate they should be despite decades of reforms and budget increases.

What should people really do encourage their kids to concentrate their time and energy on studying lessons and doing well? People’s opinions differ from each other about this problem.
Some schools, teachers and parents give their students or kids money as a stimulating means in order to encourage them to do what they should do effectively. This phenomenon is common in recent years and it is welcomed by most of the young. I don’t think it is an effective way. On the contrary it may lead to the opposite result.
My parents and family often tell me some encouraging stories in ancient or modern times such as Li Bai, Zhou Enlai and so on. Each time I make a little progress in my study, they always hug me with open arms, and whenever I am confronted with difficulties, my family always stand my side. I feel comfortable and warm in my heart for what they do for me. I make up my mind that I’ll live up to my family and my homeland.
I think, as a student myself, school and parents should educate their kids through teaching them to study for their family and their motherland rather than giving them money to let them passively do something. Only by building up some noble and long-range aims can they study on their own initiative.

The answer is definitely the latter. Immediate actions should be taken, like stopping cutting down trees, to better the environment.

We should strictly and voluntarily follow traffic rules, stopping at the red light rather than complaining about traffic jams. The message conveys that actions speak louder than words. We should take practical measures to celebrate Earth Day and to better the environment.
Earth Day is designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's environment. How should we celebrate it? Should we just shout empty slogans or take practical measures to protect our earth? I think it should be the latter because “Actions speak louder than words”. We can recycle all the things we do use for the day or find other uses for things that we no longer use or carry a cloth bag for carrying things in and recycle our plastic bags. Remember: Every day is Earth Day. Anything to help our environment is a perfect thing to do on Earth Day and every day. Don't restrict yourself to just one day a year; learn about how you can make a difference to environmental protection all the time. And put it into practice.

The Use of Examinations
A good education should make people think for themselves. But the exam can never do anything like that.

Exams make students feel nervous and can neither show students’ true abilities nor help them to learn more knowledge. To deal with exams, teachers have to train students in exam techniques.
Before exams I am always full of anxiety. Most of the time I can’t help thinking about the exams, which make me sleep badly. I know it is not good for exams, but I have no way to control myself.
During the day when I am preparing for exams, I try my best to go over all the lessons we have learned and at the mean time, I carefully review all the notes that were taken in the classes.

Mayor Bloomberg has been the mayor of New York City for nearly nine years, but for ten years he has been wearing the same shoes. This is really rare to be seen on a billionaire.
“The mayor owns two pairs of work shoes,” said the spokesman. “One day he’ll wear one, the next the other. When they got worn down, he has them repaired. He could buy any shoes he wanted, but he says since they are comfortable, and they work, there’s no need for a new pair.” According to the spokesman, the mayor saves in his footwear and he also keeps it up in his personal as well as governmental finance. “When he buys a cup of coffee, he chooses the smallest size. He buys only what he needs.”
Such is the mayor of New York City, who cares little about his shoes, avoids wasting money and focuses his attention on his work and his people in the city.
But what about our fellow students nowadays? Some wear super expensive clothes and shoes; besides, they buy as many as possible, far more than two pairs. They always want the latest, the newest and throw the old ones away though they haven’t worn them for many times.

The author introduces to us the mayor of New York City, a man who is rich but provident. The author also points out nowadays some students have the habit of wasting things.
When reading the passage, I am deeply moved by the mayor. Rich as he is, he has the virtue of saving. He spends money only on what he needs and never wastes money on what is of no use. I think this is really admirable.
The mayor reminds me of the great political leader of China, Chairman Mao. As the chairman of China, Mao led a very thrifty life. He used to wear old clothes at home. When his clothes were worn out, he would have them repaired and continued to wear them. He always told others that saving was a good virtue of Chinese people.
Thinking about the two great leaders, I feel deeply ashamed. As a young student who still has to depend on my parents, I have been leading too comfortable a life. I buy whatever I like though I don’t really need them. Besides, I like new things; when things get “old”, I tend to begin to dislike them and stop using them. Now that I realize that this is wrong, I’m determined that I shall follow the examples of the two great leaders and start to get rid of the bad habits.

The author tries to tell us with his example that we should never put off until tomorrow what you can do today, as you never know what would happen tomorrow.
As the saying goes, “Time and tide wait for no man.” If you put off what you should do today, your tomorrow would be in a mess. What a shame it is to think of myself in the past! Many times, I put things until tomorrow. Many times, I shelved my tasks and went to bed without finishing them, just finding excuses for myself. And now, time flies. I have to face the examination!
To save time is to lengthen life. From my point of view, I believe that it’s of great benefit for us to develop a good habit of cherishing time, from which we can make a sufficient preparation for tomorrow. Such a good habit will be bound to give us more confidence to make greater difference in the future.
