Apple finally approves Google Voice app
Apple began carrying Google's free voice app(应用程序) for iPhone on Tuesday, after the application hung in limbo for more than a year.
The Google Voice app interfaces（连接） with the Web service by the same name. Voice lets users register a new phone number where calls can be forwarded and organizes voice mail, text messages and call logs in a central inbox.
Google submitted its iPhone app in June 2009. Six weeks later, Google said its app still hadn't been approved. At the time, Apple carried a handful of third-party apps that hooked into Google's voice service.
Not long after the U.S. Federal Communications Commission inquired into this public argument, Apple took down all apps that interface with Google Voice, including one called GV Mobile.
In Apple's response to the FCC, the company expressed concern that these applications replace key functions of the phone and may cause confusion. Apple tests all apps for bugs -- as well as submits to the company's contentious and somewhat ambiguous rules -- before they are admitted to its online App Store.
Google has other apps for the iPhone, including one for its search engine that allows users to input text, voice or pictures from the phone's camera.
But with no way to get the Google Voice app past Apple's guards, Google created a mobile-optimized website for iPhone and other smartphone owners to use with Voice. However, websites cannot achieve features that apps can, such as system notifications and integration with a phone's address book.
But then Apple suddenly began approving third-party voice apps a couple of months ago. They were mainly pay-per-download programs. Google declined to comment at that time, instead pointing people to the Web version.
On Tuesday Google's free software appeared in the App Store. Google already has voice apps for its own Android mobile operating system and for Research in Motion's BlackBerry devices. Those apps work more seamlessly with those phones than the iPhone version.
But with the Voice app finally available, Apple may be lowering the barrier on the types of software it will allow in its store, and at the same time smoothing its competitive relationship with
Google.

Ready, set, go: Some holiday shoppers get a head start
It was three months before Christmas and Becky Gaar was on the hunt for a Disney Princess Magic Rise Oven for her 6-year-old granddaughter.
Gaar represents a group of organized consumers who shop for gifts many months before the holiday season. They even comb post-Christmas sales for gifts for the next year.
The early birds who stockpile gifts for family and friends say there are plenty of advantages to buying before Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving when discounts traditionally begin for the holiday shopping season.
Early shoppers say they are more likely to find the popular items they want in stock. They can compare the best bargains without deadline pressure to buy. They don't have to worry about whether an order will ship in time for Christmas. During the tough economic times, early buyers can sometimes score deals and discounts that may not be available during the holiday shopping rush.
Holiday sales are expected to improve this year, according to the federation. The group reported that U.S. consumers plan to spend an average of $688 on holiday-related shopping, compared to about $681 last year. Most holiday gift-givers will spend the largest part of their budget on presents for family and friends.
Retailers(零售商) are also responsible for attracting consumers to earlier holiday sales this year. Traditional shopping events such as Cyber Monday, the Monday after Thanksgiving that has become a major online shopping day, are being supplemented with online holiday sales around Halloween and on Thanksgiving, said Noam Paransky, a manager and retail specialist at the global consulting firm Kurt Salmon Associates.
Over the past few years, some stores have been trying to cause Christmas excitement as early as July. Sears, Target, Kmart and Toys "R" Us have offered "Christmas in July" sales. QVC, a company specializing in shopping via television, doled out holiday discounts and specials this summer. Other online sites have provided free shipping to encourage customers.
Despite the possibility of finding bigger savings at the last minute, some shoppers say they prefer their early gift shopping traditions. For more than 10 years, Liz Dolan, a 54-year-old nurse in Michigan, said she and some of the women in her family have dedicated a weekend trip in October or early November to shop for Christmas presents.
It's a family event where the group purchases gifts together. Then they return to the hotel room, where they wrap the gifts. She said the early shopping weekend may be an opportunity for the women to bond, but it also removes the hassle and stress during the already-busy holiday season.

Do health drinks live up to their labels?
The makers of POM Wonderful pomegranate juice say that the drink improves blood flow and heart health, prevents and treats prostate cancer, and works 40 percent as well as Viagra (whatever that means). All for about four dollars a bottle.
Those impressive claims helped the company rack up $91 million in sales in 2009. They also earned the disapproval of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Last month, the agency charged POM Wonderful with making "false and unsubstantiated" health claims, and is asking the company to remove the claims from its ads.
A 100 percent juice drink that contains antioxidants (and no added sugar), POM is just one of many drinks that bill themselves as promoting better health. Vitamin Water, kombucha tea, coconut water, and various brands of juice drinks made from acai, goji berry（枸杞）, and mangos teen(山竹果) have all used health claims in their marketing -- and some, like POM, have been the subject of scrutiny and legal action.
The FTC, along with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), has been cracking down on food and drink makers for allegedly overselling the health benefits of their products. In 2009 alone, the FDA warned 17 companies that they were providing misleading nutritional information on their packaging or making overly specific health claims.
Not all of the products were drinks, but "the drink category stands out," says Bruce Silverglade, director of legal affairs at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a consumer advocacy group based in Washington, D.C. "At first sight it seems that drink products are certainly a large proportion of food products that make false health-related claims."
Are the health claims true? Yes and no. The federal government doesn't require companies to examine health claims with the agency before plastering them on product packaging (as long as the claims are accompanied by a disclaimer about their uncertainty). But that doesn't mean the claims are invented -- most are based in research.
The research is often funded by the manufacturers, however, and industry-funded research can be prone to bias. A 2007 study found that research on health drinks that was funded entirely by beverage companies was between four and eight times more likely to find a favorable result than research with no industry support.
"If a cell phone company told you they tested all the models and their model came out the best, would you believe it? Probably not," says Dr. Lenard Lesser, M.D., one of the co-authors of that study and a researcher at UCLA. "The same is true with nutrition research, but the stakes（赌注） are higher because we're putting our bodies at risk."

Holiday travel: Airport survival guide
The crowds. The lines. The security and scanning. The sprint to the gate. All of it can overwhelm air travelers -- especially during the holiday rush --h but it doesn't have to be that way.
And as security measures continue to ramp up（巩固）, with pat-downs and new scans, navigating overbooked flights, overflowing airports just got a bit more dicey.
We asked travel experts to provide tips to make the airport experience a smooth one, especially if you haven't flown since last holiday season.
But first, be aware that you'll have lots of company in your quest to share a turkey dinner with relatives.
It's estimated that 42.2 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home for Thanksgiving, according to AAA and IHS Global Insight. That's an 11 percent increase from last year, when 37.9 million people traveled during the holiday.
And about 24 million people will be crammed（塞进） into airplanes, a 3.5 percent increase over last year, according to the Air Transport Association of America, which represents some of the nation's biggest airlines.
The busiest travel day is expected to be the Sunday after Thanksgiving, followed by the Monday after the holiday, the ATA said. The Friday before Thanksgiving week and the Wednesday before the holiday will be the other peak travel days.
Let modern technology save you some hassles and maybe even some money. Check in online up to 24 hours before your flight is scheduled to leave, and print your boarding pass at home.
"This allows you to secure your seat assignment, double-check for any schedule changes ... and decrease your chances of getting bumped if your flight is oversold," said Genevieve Shaw Brown, senior editor at Travelocity.
New since the holidays last year: More carriers now allow you to check in from your smartphone and use a digital bar code on the screen to pass through the airport.
If you're using this option, save the bar code as a photo on your device, which will make it much easier to retrieve at security and at the gate, advised Bryan Saltzburg, general manager of Trip Advisor Flights.
If you're checking bags, many airlines have raised their fees this year, but some offer discounts if you prepay during the online check-in. Delta, Continental and US Airways, for example, take $2 off the first bag and $3 off the second if you pay online when you check in for your flight on the carrier's website.
"Know before you go," Saltzburg said. "There are fees, and it's important to educate yourself and be prepared and handle as much of the check-in process before you actually get to the airport."
