Every day, a homeowner in Pennsylvania is reminded of a mistake he made 13 years ago. At around 8 in the evening, his otherwise peaceful house comes alive with the beeping of an alarm clock he accidentally dropped down a vent (通气孔)over a decade ago. It’s been stuck in the wall ever since.
13 years ago, Jerry Lynn, of Ross Township, Pennsylvania, wanted to drill a hole through his living room wall, so he could pass the television cable through it. He didn’t want to destroy any pipes or wires in the wall, so he came up with a brilliant idea to ensure that he was drilling in an empty place. He grabbed his alarm clock, tied it to a string and programmed it to go off in 10 minutes. Then he lowered it into the wall through a vent, and waited for it to ring. His goal was to drill near the place where the ringing was coming from, ensuring that there was nothing to pass through there. It all went according to plan, until the alarm clock fell into the wall.
Try as he might, the man couldn’t get back the alarm clock, but figured it would probably run out of battery in three or four months, so he wasn’t too worried about it. That was in September 2004, but 13 years later, the alarm clock still rings every day, at 10 minutes to 8 in the evening during daylight savings time, and ten minutes to seven, during standard time.
As you can imagine, Jerry and his wife, Sylvia, have gotten used to the ringing living room wall after 13 years, but it can still shock guests.
“I would have probably torn down that wall after only 2 days, just to stop that boring thing, but after putting up with it for 13 years, that would be a shame. I’ve never heard of a clock battery lasting that long, even though they don’t use too much power, so it will be interesting to see how long it will keep ringing for,” Jerry said.

America has been called a democracy since its independence more than 200 years ago. However, at that time, only men were permitted to vote. Only men could own land and practice most professions. Women could not get a higher education or hold public office. The woman’s place was considered to be the home. Working women were not common. They usually had poor jobs and little respect.
Through the history of the country, many American women have worked to reduce the restrictions that society placed on them. They have met opposition. Slowly, however, the opportunities for women have increased. Colleges and universities were established for women. Later women were admitted to schools originally established only for men. In the early part of this century, American women were finally allowed to vote. During and since World War II American women have become a considerable part of the American work force.
Today, many women in America hold important positions or are pursuing careers that they could not pursue in the past. But many women are dissatisfied with the current situation. They point out that women are often paid less than men for the same work they do.

Recently women worked to get a change in the law to the U. S. Constitution ensuring their rights. We communicate most commonly, of course, with our words. But we also speak with our bodies. We call it body language. Sometimes, though, we need to describe our body language with words. That is what today’s show is about-talking about body language.
Two types of body language have made their way into text messaging and social media language. The most common is LOL. If we are LOL-ing, we are laughing out loud. That is what l-o-l stands for. And it is easy to know when to use this. If a friend writes something to you that is extremely funny, you can reply with a “LOL.”.
Here’s another one you might see in a text message from a friend. When someone nods their head up and down, that means they are in agreement. And if they shake their heads back and forth, it means they are disagreeing. Well, sometimes it does. Sometimes shaking one’s head means something completely different.
For example, I might say I could only shake my head at his arrogance(傲慢). This means that I couldn’t believe that he had said or done something so arrogant. In a text, email or social media post, you can simply type SMH. But just as with LOL, it doesn’t sound right in spoken English.
Here is an example of how to use the full phrase “throw your hands up” in a conversation. If your friend is always behaving badly, you may just have to throw your have to throw your hands up. This body language expression means that you realize that you cannot do anything to make a situation better.
For example, let’s say you are teaching a roomful of young children when suddenly a dog runs through the classroom! The children jump up and start laughing and chasing the dog. You can’t do anything to quiet them down. So, you just throw your hands up and let them have fun.
Shrugging your shoulders is when you raise and lower them. As body language, it shows that you don’t care about something. But it can also mean that you are uncertain or perhaps just bored.
