Love Him as You Were Once Loved
One day, an 80-year-old man was sitting on the sofa with his highly educated son. Suddenly a crow rested on their window.

The old man asked his son, “What is this?” The son replied, “It is a crow.” After a few minutes, the father asked his son the second time, “What is this?” The son said, “I have just told you ‘It’s a crow’.” After a little while, the old father again asked his son, “What is this?” This time the son said to his father impatiently. “It’s a crow, a crow.” A little later, the father again asked his son the fourth time, “What is this?” The son shouted at his father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again? Are people less happy or more happy the older they get? If you answered more happy, then you were right. Based on a study published two years ago, people generally become happier and experience less worry after age 50. In fact, the study found that by the age of 85, people are happier with their life than they were at 18.
The findings came from a Gallup survey of more than 340,000 adults in the USA in 2008. At that time, those adults were between the ages of 18 and 85. Professor Arthur Stone from Stony Brook University led the study. His team found that levels of stress were highest among adults between the ages of 22 and 25. Stress levels dropped sharply after people reached their 50s. Happiness was highest among the youngest adults and those in their early 70s. But the people least likely to report feeling negative (消极的) emotions were those in their 70s and 80s.
The survey also found that men and women have similar emotional patterns (模式) as they grow older. However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men did.
The researchers also considered possible influences like having young children, being jobless or being single. But they found that influences like these did not affect the levels of happiness and well-being related to age.
So why would happiness increase with age? One point is that, as people grow older, they become more thankful for what they have and have better control of their emotions. They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences.
Aging can bring other obvious improvements. In a study, people in their 80s reported the fewest sleep problems. Researchers surveyed more than 150,000 American adults. The study was led by Michael Grandner at the University of Pennsylvania. The original goal of the study was to prove the popular belief that aging is connected with increased sleep problems. The survey did find an increase during middle age, especially in women. But except for that, people reported that they felt their sleep quality (质量) improved as they got older. And a better sleep quality brings a deeper sense of happiness.

Flowers bloom (开花) only if they are planted in rich soil (土壤). We are similarly influenced by our environment. When our environment is bad, we may get sick physically or mentally. When our environment is supportive, we are more likely to thrive.

People who see the potential (潜力) in you, even when you can’t see it in yourself. These are the people who you should have on your team and in your life.
So if you really long for success, look back at the people who come in and out of your life. Are most of the people you know supportive or unsupportive? When people around you aren’t supportive, what kind of person do you become? Do you become shy, fearful, hateful and unhappy? When you connect with those who are supportive, what happens to you? Do you become open, lively, happy, strong and brave?
