With good looks, a boy won four gold medals. Born in 1993, Ning Zetao had a very good performance in swimming. He easily showed himself to be a rising star during the 17th Asian Games, which was held in Incheon, South Korea in 2014.
Ning won four gold medals: the 50-meter freestyle, the 100-meter freestyle, the 4x100m freestyle relay (接力), and the 4x100m medley (混合的) relay. His most successful act was in the 100m freestyle race, during which he set a new Asian record of 47.70 seconds. It was considered as the world’s third fastest performance of 2014.
Chen Yunpeng, the former (以前的) head coach of the national swimming team said, “In the past, players from Western countries acted best in short distance (距离) freestyle swimming competitions. But Ning’s victory shows that it’s possible for Chinese or even Asian swimming players to make a better change in this game.” Ning joined the 4x100m medley relay, helping the Chinese team win the relay in 3 minutes 31.37 seconds, a new Asian Games record. If you look through weibo over the weekend, you will see videos of the US famous people drenching (使湿透) themselves in ice water. It seems everyone is enjoying the fun, from popular singers like Taylor Swift and Justin Timberlake, to well-known people in science, such as Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg.
Is it some kind of new, cool way to deal with summer heat? Of course not. It’s a money collecting game called the Ice Bucket (桶) Challenge, and it wants to let people know about a kind of serious disease (疾病) —ALS.
The challenge is just simple. It asks a person to pour a bucket of ice water over his head within 24 hours, or he has to donate money toward fighting ALS. Even if a person completes the challenge, he can also donate money if he likes. Once a person completes the challenge, he is supposed to pass this challenge to several other people, usually three, which is why the challenge has been growing and growing.
Since the beginning of June, the game has spread across the social media in the US. According to Facebook, more than 15 million people from different countries so far have been on the challenge. It has raised more than $2.3 million to support research on the illness.
