Manuel, a seventeen-year-old student, sat on his bed. He was trying to understand what had happened. Two detectives had come to arrest him and take him to the police station. Five women were there who looked at him and shouted, “That’s the one! We know the face of the man who robbed us.”
Manuel cried again and again. “I don’t know what you mean. I don’t know any of you!” But he went to prison anyway.
Manuel knew that lawyers can help people in trouble. They know ways to find out the truth. So when Manuel called his father and told him what happened, his father called a lawyer. The lawyer came to see Manuel, listened carefully, and then promised, “Don’t worry, I’ll be back soon.” The lawyer spent many days visiting Manuel’s school and asking questions about him. When Webster was young, he was a teacher. But he quickly became tired of the books he used in class. They were all about the English people and places. Since he wanted books that would be interesting to the American children, he wrote three books with many American examples.
Webster worked hard to change the spelling of American English. He wanted words to be spelled in the same way the were pronounced. For example, he thought the word “laugh” should be spelled “laf”. And he tried many ways to ask people to help him to do this.
