Passage 1
China stores have been developing rapidly in China during the past few years and taking hold of ever-increasing retail (零售) market share, an official survey indicates. The State Economic and Trade Commission (SETC) survey shows that the annual sales volume of China’s 20 biggest chains leapt last year by 43 percent and the number of their retail stores rose by 46.7 percent, while sales for the whole retail market grew by 10.1 percent. Shanghai Hua Lian Supermarket Company holds the top position with 14.06 billion yuan (US$1.7 billions) in sale and 1,225 retail stores.
The statistics indicate that the biggest stores are swallowing more market share, leaving little development space for medium and small stores, said analysts (分析家). Analysts also note that almost all the giant chains have their headquarters in East China, but they are likely to explore western regions in the near future. With China’s entrance into the World Trade Organization, its market is attracting overseas retailers. Too. The country is committed to opening gradually its retail business, and as a result more chain stores form outside China will have a share of the pie. Successful domestic retailers are preparing to battle for market share. Shops like Hua Lian and Guo Mei, a giant home appliance distributor in Beijing, have announced ambitious plants for development.

Passage 2
I wonder if any other readers who do not have a job feel as frustrated as I do by many people’s responses. I am repeatedly asked “Why aren’t you working?” and I feel this question is a criticism. People seem to be suggesting that I am lazy and useless, wasting my life “doing nothing”. Is it so wrong to want to stay at home and take care of my home and family? I enjoy it and would like to remind all those women who are critical of people like me that it is possible to stay at home and feel valued and fulfilled. My husband and two children really appreciate me and the atmosphere in our house is happy and positive.
Luckily, my husband earns enough money to support us all but I believe that, in many ways, I save money by staying at home. If I had a job, I would need help with the children, the home and the garden. I would need to have a freezer to store food, have a microwave cooker to save time. I would have to buy expensive convenience foods because I wouldn’t have time to cook properly. I would have to pay baby-sitters, music teachers, odd-job men and many others. I do not want to pay other people to work for my family! I love being with them in all sorts of different situations.
My days are as busy and satisfying as those of most people who have jobs outside the home. As well as doing the usual cooking and cleaning, I make healthy and economical soups, jam, biscuits and cakes. I help my children with their homework and organize exciting games for them and their friends.
Staying at home all day is not boring. I do all the household decorating and repairs. I make clothes for the whole family. And, what is more important, I have time to really talk to my husband and children.
I plan my time carefully so that I can attend courses at the local college and take part I local politics and charity work.
I would advise any parent who can afford it to stay at home. It is economically and psychologically wise to do so ----- if that’s what you want. Perhaps some of my main critics are people who don’t enjoy working at home for the family. I do not criticize people who choose to work. I just wish they would allow me to do as I choose. I am proud to be a housewife.

Societies and Health
Peter Davis, Professor of Public Health at Christchurch University in New Zealand believes that too much interest is placed on individual causes of illness and disease. He argues health research and health policy should focus on social causes of disease. He proposes a classification of disease based on the following four dimensions of western society: economic, social, cultural and political.
In Professor Parker’s model the economic dimension is based on the institutions of the labor market, capital and profit. The social dimension is based on the institutions of family, kinship and community. Beliefs, practices and lifestyle are the institutions of the cultural dimension and power structures are the institutions of the political dimension.
First, Professor Davis examines the economic dimension. Because profit is placed before safety in the competitive world of the market, occupations are the cause of accidents, deafness and even early deaths. When Professor Davis examines his second dimension, the social, he claims that family life in Western society is one of the major causes of hypertension and mental illness. The cultural dimension affects the way we eat and drink: the Western diet is the cause of obesity and our commitment to smoking and drinking contributes to our high levels of lung cancer and bowel cancer. The power structures in the political dimension mean that there is a great deal of social inequality. This leads to unequal access to health services. The result of this inequality is higher illness and mortality rates for those with less power.

Passage 4
Shopping for clothes is not the same experience for a man as it is for a woman. A man goes shopping because he needs something. His purpose is settled and decided in advance. He knows what he wants, and his objective is to find it and buy it; the price is a secondary consideration. All men simply walk into a shop and ask the assistant for what they want. If the shop has it in stock, the salesman promptly produces it, and the business of trying it on proceeds at once. All being well, the deal can be and often is completed in less than five minutes, with hardly any chat and to everyone's satisfaction. For a man, slight problems may begin when the shop does not have what he wants, or does not have exactly what he wants. In that case the salesman, as the name implies, tries to sell the customer something else, he offers the nearest he can to the article required. No good salesman brings out such a substitute without least consideration; he does so with skill and polish: “I know this jacket is not the style you want, sir, but would you like to try it for size. It happens to be the color you mentioned." Few men have patience with this treatment, and the usual response is: “This is the right color and may be the right size but I should be wasting my time and yours by trying it on. Now how does a women go about buying clothes? In almost every respect she does so in the opposite way. Her shopping is not often based on need. She has never fully made up her mind what she wants, and she is only “having a look round". She is always open to persuasion: indeed she sets great store by what the saleswoman tells her, even by what companion tell her. She will try on any number of things. Uppermost in her mind is the thought of finding something that everyone thinks suits her. Contrary to a lot of jokes, most women have an excellent sense of value when they buy clothes. They are always on the lookout for the unexpected bargain. Faced with a roomful of dresses, a woman may easily spend an hour going from one rail to another, to and fro often retracing her steps, before selecting the dresses she wants to try on. It is a tiresome process, but apparently an enjoyable one. Most dress shops provide chairs for the waiting husbands.
