Imagine getting through your busy day without hands or legs. Picture your life without the ability to walk, care for your basic needs, or even hug those you love. Meet Nicholas Vujicic. Without any medical explanation or warning, Nick was born in 1982 in Melbourne, Australia, without arms and legs.
The early days were difficult. Throughout his childhood, Nick not only dealt with the typical challenges of school and adolescence, but he also struggled with depression (抑郁) and loneliness. Nick constantly wondered why he was different from all the other kids. He questioned the purpose of life.
After experiencing many difficulties, Vujicic eventually began to realize that his experiences were inspiring to many people and began to be thankful for being alive. A key turning point in his life was when his mother showed him a newspaper article about a man dealing with a severe disability. This led him to realize he was not the only one with major struggles. When he was seventeen, he started to give talks. He has traveled around the world, sharing his story with millions, sometimes in stadiums full of people, speaking to a range of various groups such as students, teachers, young people, business professionals and so on. He has visited more than 50 countries and given thousands of talks. Now he is an encouraging speaker with TED.
Vujicic promotes his work through television shows and through his writing. His first book, Life Without Limits: Inspiration for a Ridiculously Good Life, was published by Random House in 2010. He markets a motivational DVD, Life’s Greater Purpose, a short documentary (纪录片) filmed in 2005. He markets a DVD for young people titled No Arms, No Legs, No Worries! In March 2008, Vujicic was interviewed by Bob Cummings for the 20/20 American television show.
According to Nick, the victory over his struggles, as well as his strength and passion（激情） for life today, can be owing to the power of hope. His family, friends and the many people he has met along the journey have inspired him to carry on, as well. Today this energetic young gentleman has achieved more than most people achieve in a lifetime.

A few years ago, New York City had a blackout(停电) which caused all the TV stations to go out for several hours. 
When the TV went off in the Bufkins house, panic began. First, Bufkins thought something was wrong with his TV set in the living room, so he rushed into his bedroom and turned on another set. Nothing. Mrs. Bufkins said to her husband, “It isn’t your set. The power is off.”
Bufkins said, “Who are you?”
   “I am your wife, Edith.”
   “Oh,” Bufkins said. “then I suppose those kids in there are mine. ”
   “That’s right. If you ever got out of that armchair in front of the TV set, you’d know us.”
   “Boy, they’ve really grown,” Bufkins said, looking at his son and daughter. “How old are they now?”

   “Who’s he?” Bufkins’ son, Henry asked.
“It’s your father,” Mrs. Bufkins said. 
   “I’m pleased to meetcha,” Bufkins’ daughter, Mary, said shyly. There was an embarrassed silence all around.
   “Well, what school do you go to?”
   “We go to Forest High School,” Bufkins’ son, Henry said.
   “What do you do?” Mary asked.
   “I thought you were a car salesman,” Mrs. Bufkins said.

Young women who take part in beauty contests (比赛) are helping to keep alive an outdated opinion of women that a woman’s most important value is how she looks.
Women have been working very hard through the years to change their image. They have been trying to prove that the value of a woman does not lie only in her beauty. The world is just beginning to recognize that women are as smart, wise and strong in personality as men are, and that there are qualities more important than looks when judging people. When women take part in beauty contests for top prizes, they encourage people to value them for their beauty alone. It is unfair to say that beauty alone determines one’s worth.
Beauty contests not only encourage spectators (观众) to judge women by their appearance, but they encourage this idea in the contestants as well. These young women spend months losing weight to be the “right” size and learning how to dress, wear makeup, and walk just right so that some judges will consider them beautiful. I think it’s great for a woman to feel good about her appearance, but looks shouldn’t be sought after in an extreme or unreasonable way. There are too many other, more important things in a young woman’s life: learning, developing friendships and preparing for their future work and perhaps a family.
As long as there are beauty contests, women won’t be fully recognized as well-rounded human beings.

Can you do the math：What is one hundred times four, divided by the square root of a hundred? How can you work it out quickly?
The answer is forty. Years ago, three scientists at Texas Instruments, Jerry Merryman, James Van Tassel and Jack Kilby, invented the handheld electronic calculator. Their first device could add, subtract, multiply and divide and it was small and easy to take.
Yet after forty years, calculators in the classroom still add up to the same old debate. Generally, calculators are considered to be useful --- especially with more complex math. Some math teachers at every level support the use of calculators and students are even permitted to use them when they take college entrance tests. But it is also thought that young students should know basic calculation before they begin using them.
