I went to a nearby car factory today with my uncle, who works there. One thing I noticed was that most of the work was done by robots（机器人）. Painting, testing, welding and many other jobs are performed by robots. The whole dashboard (仪表板) is put into a car by a robot. In the past, it took two men to do so, and it might hurt their backs quite a bit.
It got me thinking: Is it a good thing that robots are replacing factory workers? On one hand, robots generally do a more accurate job than people. They are not likely to make many mistakes. If something goes wrong with one car, an alarm goes off. They do exactly the same thing every time, but a human worker is unable to do so. On the other hand, robots reduce costs for companies. Companies don’t have to pay robots wages or injury compensation (补偿) if they’re broken. If something in a robot does go wrong, it won’t have to take time off work for a year, or even forever, as could happen to a real person if he breaks his back or burns himself while welding.
The obvious downside is that robots increase unemployment rate, which in turn increases taxes. We don’t want to pay for those who are out of work just because a company has replaced them with robots.

For Pineda, it was a long way to succeed.
His story began in El Salvador, where he was born with something wrong with his mouth. He had great difficulty in speaking. At age 2, his family’s home burned down. Pineda was injured, and his legs needed to be cut. His mother died when he was 8, and he spent years on the streets before he was taken in by an orphanage (孤儿院).
Finally, at the orphanage, Pineda began to receive support and encouragement. He taught himself to play guitar. He began to perform with other musicians. Then the group went to Chicago, where Pineda, then 18, caught the attention of many people, who wondered what they could do to help him.
Shriners Hospitals offered him free medical care. A group called the Mulliganeers agreed to pay for Pineda’s flights to and from El Salvador.
When he was in the hospital, Pineda began writing music, and wondered if he might be able to record his own album. Soon with the help of a musician, “The Sound of Gratitude (感激)” was born. On October 15th, Pineda went to a Chicago club to play his new songs to strangers, and to the friends who had helped him come so far.
Pineda was amazed that he had come into such a good luck, after having so many years of hardship. “We have a saying in El Salvador, ‘Suffer first, then enjoy.’ I guess that’s what’s happening,” he said.

Ask any student to say one thing they know about Charles Dickens, and it is very likely they will say Oliver Twist. His classic tale of a poor orphan boy strikes at the heart of all those who have ever wanted "more", as Oliver did.
And now Dickens' classic scenes of the lives of the Victorian British poor will appear in a big screen movie, "Oliver Twist," an adaptation of his classic tale directed by Roman Polanski.
The new film is not meant for younger viewers, and is meant for children over 13. For those old enough to enjoy it, however, the film shows just how long people have been enjoying Dickens' remarkable literature. His short stories and essays began appearing in magazines in 1833. "Oliver Twist" was published in 1837 - more than 165 years ago.
"Oliver Twist" tells the story of an orphan forced to live in a workhouse headed by the awful Mr Bumble, who cheats the boys who work there out of their already low pay. Oliver decides to escape to the streets of London, where he meets a thief called Fagin, played by Sir Ben Kingsley, who leads him into a world of crime. Several of Dickens' books have been made into films and television series, including 2002's "Nicholas Nickleby" and 2000's "David Copperfield." And several versions of "A Christmas Carol" have entertained audiences for years.
In his novels, Dickens wrote about several important issues. He talked about the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1824 in "Oliver Twist"; the French Revolution in "A Tale of Two Cities"; and helping the poor in "Hard Times.” One of Dickens' best-known books is the first Christmas book he wrote - "A Christmas Carol" (1843), about a mean man.
