、Should We Celebrate the Western Festivals? 其一 Nowadays,Western festivals such as Christmas and Valentine's Day are gaining increasing popularity in China, especially among college students. But whether we should celebrate these festivals has become a subject of heated discussion. Some believe c

、elebrating Western festivals is a sign of globalization. They argue that China needs to take in various foreign cultures so as to blend into the modern world. And celebrating Western festivals is a good opportunity for the Chinese to know more about other cultures. However, others believe that the W

、estern festivals threaten a kind of cultural aggression. Therefore, we should drive them out lest they should undermine our traditional culture. In my opinion, as college students, we should preserve the traditional Chinese culture as well as stay open to Western ones. Therefore, while laying empha

、sis on Chinese festivals, we could also absorb foreign elements.  其二 Whether we Chinese should celebrate the western festivals or not has been a subject of heated discussion and argument among people of all ranks recent years. Some say that it’s improper for the western festivals to be celebrated

、in China because such a festival as Christmas possesses strong religious sense and colors. They are deeply convinced that on the one hand the popularity of the western festivals in China is the result of the foreign cultural invasion and the infiltration1 of the foreign “soft force”. On the other ha

、nd, more and more Chinese people, especially young people, have lost their interest in our traditional Chinese festivals like Mid-autumn Festival, Dragon-boat Festival, Tomb-sweeping Day, Double Ninth Festival etc., showing clearly that some countrymen have lost their self-confidence in our national

、 culture and customs. At the advent of the western festivals, such as Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and so forth, a festive air scarcely seen before appears across the country, attracting thousands upon thousands of Chinese people. In general, the Chinese young men almost don’t know the p

、rofound implications of our traditional Chinese festivals, instead they are familiar with the western festivals and go after them like a flock of ducks, which has brought about a serious shock to the Chinese traditional culture and the sense of the community. If the situation continues to develop li

、ke this, the consequence would be too ghastly to contemplate. They say as most of us don’t believe in Christ, God or religions, and few of us know the meaning of Christmas, what’s the point of celebrating it? Christmas is a festival full of religious colors and meanings for the Christians. If the no

、n-Christians participate in the observance, they are subservient to foreigners. So let’s keep our mind on the traditional Chinese festivals instead. Others think that being one of the achievements won by the Chinese people in the reform and opening to the outside world, the western festivals are righ

、t and proper to be celebrated by us Chinese. It has nothing to do with worshiping and having blind faith in things foreign. A case in point is that Christmas is springing up quietly and soundlessly in our country and becoming widely popular day by day. As is known to all that Christmas Day, December

、 25, is the most important festival in the western world, although it is almost certainly not the day on which Jesus Christ was born. Originally Christmas was a religious rite—the “Christ Mass” ---and it did not become a fixed holiday until 440 A.D. . Today, Christmas is still observed as an anniver

、sary of the birthday of Christ, but its religious aspect is almost lost to the lay world amidst all the commercialisation6 and human excitement of it. The celebration usually includes an exchange of cards and presents among relatives and friends, decking the sitting room out with a Christmas tree, a

、nd a feast featuring a turkey or a goose. People can take advantage of this moment to entertain themselves, get together and extend their greetings each other. It was said that ten doctors from the most famous universities of China published an article in the newspapers, putting forward a joint pr

、oposal with signatures to call on the fellow countrymen to “resist the western expansion of culture and the foreign soft force”. The article begins with the words that the western culture has turned from gentle breeze and fine rain into violent wind and driving rain. The article continues that when

、Christmas is around the corner, shopping malls, restaurants, hotels and other places in China are beautifully decorated with Christmas trees and other Christmas ornaments. The nets, newspapers, TV stations and radios are filled with the Christmas information while countless Christmas cards and tens

、of millions of Christmas messages are sent everywhere through the post offices and the mobilephones. It is on the Christmas Eve that people come together and rejoice with wild excitement, drinking, singing, and dancing. As is mentioned above that our society is evolving into a society with foreign o

、verculture. In the meantime, they criticize the merchants for the responsibility of encouraging and increasing the Christmas’ influence in China. It is common knowledge that every nation has its own special festivals with colorful backgrounds, which are closely connected with its special history or

、 excellent culture. So festivals are the products of the sedimentary accretion8 of a nation’s culture over thousands of years. At the primitive stage of the social and civilized community and society, many of the festivals, no matter whether Chinese or foreign, can be traced back to different religi

、ons or customs in the distant past. Take the Chinese Spring Festival as an example, setting firecrackers was an effective way for the ancient people to guard against the tigers and wolfs and expel the demons and ghosts but these days the festival has become a joyful symbol for the Chinese people. Th

、e continuous prosperity of the society and the steady progress of the culture promote the development of festive culture. The main characteristic of the festivals is as follows: the festivals with good vitality were gradually freed from the mysterious and superstitious9 atmosphere and evolved into t

、he real festivals for the purpose of get-together and entertainment. If a festival comes into being, it will be handed down over ages from generations to generations with a relative independence and stability. Now and then the social conditions being changed, the festivals remain the shadow of the

、 old habits and customs. Now that many habits and customs have been passed over to the present days and accepted by the people, they show the dogged life force in themselves, but it doesn’t mean the festivals are invariable. On the contrary, they are continuously changing, some of which have died ou

、t on account of the backward and the outmoded conventions and customs.    Nowadays some of the festivals are characterized by cross-nations and trans-areas. In other words, it’s the result of economic and cultural exchanges of various countries. It can be said that the process of the development of

、 the human civilization is the very process of mutual infiltration and mutual integration, during which one culture absorbs the nourishment13 of other cultures and each culture develops respectively on a new high degree. During the reform and opening, China needs to assimilate a good deal of foreign

、 progressive culture and swallow anything and everything. As a result, the economic integration brings in the festive integration. It’s right to lay emphasis on our traditional festivals but it’s not proper to reject the foreign ones on this account. As late Chairman Mao said: “Make the past serve t

、he present and foreign things serve China.” In fact, China has been receiving some foreign festivals on a selective basis since the reform and opening like Christmas Day, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, which have taken root and sprouted across our country, becoming popular festivals

、 among the people. For one thing, with the various communications and media of the day changing with each passing day, the exchanges in each field are on increase day by day, for another the traditional Chinese culture and customs are being adopted and the Chinese festivals are being celebrated by m

、ore and more western peoples. As a traditional Chinese festival and a typical Eastern culture, the Chinese Spring Festival is being observed by foreigners in many countries. The foreign people enjoy Chinese dumplings, set off firecrackers, perform lion’s dances and take part in all kinds of festive

、activities. In America and Canada, not only are the stamps with the twelve Chinese animals issued by the postal department but also the Chinese commemorative coins by the central banks each year. When the Spring Festival is drawing near, leaders of some governments pay New Year calls to the Chinese

、living in there through televisions, broadcasting, and newspapers. The local leaders at all levels even take part in the Spring Festival observances or parades. In some states of the United States, the Chinese Spring Festival has even been set legal festival. I don’t think it’s necessary to find a

、definite answer to whether we Chinese should celebrate the foreign festivals or not. We ought to respect others’ decision instead of interference in their choices. It’s not a bad thing for the people to take advantage of the western festivals, entertaining themselves, getting together and exchanging

、 greetings. To the whole society, Christmas can stimulate the country’s economy and the people’s consumption, increase the income of tourism and catering industry and other entertainment industries, creating more social wealth. With the rapid development of society, science and technology, the glob

、alization of the global village is the inevitability of the globalization of economy. For example, the Buddhist culture originated from India from 6th century to 5th century B.C. was created by Buddha and the Moslem born on the Arabian Peninsula was created by Mohammed in the beginning of the 7th ce

、ntury. They are not our native cultures but they have taken root in China for thousands of years. When both Buddhism and Moslem were spread across China, they were smoothly and naturally integrated with the Chinese culture, having great effects on China’s society, politics, culture and life. So to s

、ay, at the time we popularize and carry forward China’s traditional culture, we should critically absorb the advanced cultures from abroad. All in all, it’s natural for the Chinese people, especially young people, to take part in the Christmas activities, relaxing, unbosoming and relieving themsel

、ves. They are so attracted by the Christmas decorations, colors and music that no one looks into its religious background and traditional meaning of Christmas. I think if you are not interested in the celebration of the western festivals, you can ignore them but don’t complain and make veiled critic

、ism. Some people like to celebrate the western festivals but I’m sure they neither identify with them nor betray our own culture. 其三 Today, western festivals become more and more popular in China. A survey carried out in some big cities of China shows that a grate number of young people enjoy west

、ern holidays. It said, 68.5% of correspondents celebrate Christmas Day, and 61.8% celebrate Valentines’ Day. We can seldom find somebody who does not know these foreign festivals. Some critics are arguing that people are loosing their traditional values and the respect of historical heritage. In my

、opinion, we should not indulge ourselves too much in them and neglect the bad effect they have brought. There are three main factors which lead to this phenomenon. Firstly it bases on the economy. As China’s open-door policies, it brings not only the rapidly developing of economic, but also the mel

、ting of western culture. Since the income is increasing, people’s lives has improved. The basic problem like food, cloth and living condition have been solved, people began to pursue more about the sprit, so they can easily receive the new information from other countries. On the other hand, many fo

、reign countries are attracted to invest in China because of the opening police. Food, drink, cloths, all these things are imported in China. So are the cultures and festivals. Secondly, business people take these festivals as opportunities to gain profits. When people have money to meet the needs

、of the lives, they would like to spend some on enjoying themselves, at the same time the business man would like to enjoy the profits gained from festivals. However, they do not care if the festivals are traditional or imported. The festivals are often turned into commercial gimmicks to boost profit

、s. Usually, weeks before the festivals, market sellers have already exerted great efforts to create the holiday atmosphere and advertise their products. Spring festival is just one of them. Besides, Christmas and Valentine’s Day are the worth promoting days. As long as we go shopping, we are easily

、attracted by the goods and advertise in all kinds of stores, from the beginning to the end. Many business men choose these days to provide discounts and additional presents. for these, people are continually reminded and tempted to prepare a gift for someone, for the family and friends before Christ

、mas, for the one they love before Valentine’s Day, or for the parents before Father’ and Mothers’ Day. Many people are misled by the commercial ways and often follow the trends unconsciously. And these trends almost take place of the traditional festivals, especially in some big and developed cities

、 in China. For example, in Xiamen, Christmas is far more important in the business men’s eyes. All kinds of promoting activities are designedly arranged on Christmas Eve, people come to the store do the crazy shopping, having a meal, and playing. In order to seize more customs, some even give very l

、ow discounts during the mid-night. The attractive prices encourage people to buy goods and sent to others, and then these festivals become popular. However, things always have two sides. The presents may cause people’s vanity. Women all expect gifts from the boyfriends of husbands, and show them i

、n front of other friends. In order to earn face, the presents must be expensive ones, and always cost people an arm and a leg to buy. It is inappropriate for the youth, especially the students in the campus. Thirdly, western festivals have the cultural and historical origins in the western countrie

、s, which are not known and comprehended by most of Chinese. There are so many western festivals, including Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and Saint Valentine's Day and so on, which are originated from or related with Christian or Catholicism which are not believed in by the majority of Chinese peo
