24、some drivers spent more time under their cars than in them ! A few cars, however, completed the race. The winning car reached a speed of forty miles an hour--much faster than any of its rivals. It sped downhill at the end of the race and its driver had a lot of trouble trying to stop it. The race ga

My wife was wearing a hat that looked like a lighthouse ! Lesson42 Not very musical 并非很懂音乐 As we had had a long walk through one of the markets of Old Delhi,
29、 we stopped at a square to have a rest. After a time, we noticed a snake-charmer with two large baskets at the other side of the square, so we went to have a look at him. As soon as he saw us, he picked up a long pipe which was covered with coins and opened one of the baskets. When he began to play
30、a tune, we had our first glimpse of the snake. It rose out of the basket and began to follow the movements of the pipe. We were very much surprised when the snake charmer suddenly began to play jazz tunes and modern pop songs. The snake, however, continued to 'dance' slowly. It obviously could not t
31、ell the difference between Indian music and jazz! Lesson43 Over the South Pole 飞越南极 In 1929, three years after his flight over the North Pole, the American explorer, R. E. Byrd, successfully flew over the South Pole for the first time. Though, at first, Byrd and his men were able to take a great m
32、any photographs of the mountains that lay below, they soon ran into serious trouble. At one point, it seemed certain that their plane would crash. It could only get over the mountains if it rose to 10,000 feet. Byrd at once ordered his men to throw out two heavy food sacks. The plane was then able t
33、o rise and it cleared the mountains by 400 feet. Byrd now knew that he would be able to reach the South Pole which was 300 miles away, for there were no more mountains in sight. The aircraft was able to fly over the endless white plains without difficulty. Lesson44 Through the forest 穿过森林 Mrs A
34、nne Sterling did not think of the risk she was taking when she ran through a forest after two men. They had rushed up to her while she was having a picnic at the edge of a forest with her children and tried to steal her handbag. In the struggle, the strap broke and, with the bag in their possession,
35、 both men started running through the trees. Mrs Sterling got so angry that she ran after them. She was soon out of breath, but she continued to run. When she caught up with them, she saw that they had sat down and were going through the contents of the bag, so she ran straight at them. The men got
36、such a fright that they dropped the bag and ran away. 'The strap needs mending,' said Mrs Sterling later, 'but they did not steal anything.' Lesson45 A clear conscience 问心无愧 The whole village soon learnt that a large sum of money had been lost. Sam Benton, the local butcher, had lost his wallet w
37、hile taking his savings to the post-office. Sam was sure that the wallet must have been found by one of the villagers, but it was not returned to him. Three months passed, and then one morning, Sam found his wallet outside his front door. It had been wrapped up in newspaper and it contained half the

48、通知》等文件精神,是在缜密研究、充分论证的基础上形成的。项目建成后,不仅可安置接纳400名老人,解决吃、住、养、疗、玩等方面的问题,为国家和社会减轻一定压力。同时,还可带动地区经济的发展,为社会解决50多人的就业问题,缓解了当前社会的就业压力,建设项目具有坚实的建设基础,前期工作已经启动,可操作性强。资金筹集完全可以实现,总投资1500万元中,国家资金投入为600万元,地方财政配套投入为400万元,自筹资金为500万元。能够实现预期目标并取得良好的效益。从以上可以看出本项目的建设是切实可行的。 第二章 项目建设的背景和必要性 一、项目建设的背景 随着我国的社会进步、经济发展、科学医疗卫
49、生事业、人民生活水平的不断提高、人均寿命的延长、老年人口正逐年增加、我国已正式步入老龄化社会。根据有关部门统计2004年,我国有60岁以上的老人1.36亿人,超过我国总人口的10%,同时经科学的预测分析到2050年,我国60岁以上老年人将达到4.5亿人。人口老龄化现象是社会经济不断发展,医疗卫生事业不断改善,科学和文明程度不断提高,出生水平、死亡水平不断下降,科学平均期望寿命不断延长的结果。目前我国社会正处于社会型态的转型期,老年人消费观念的升华,老年人保健、康复和养老越来越多的受到党和政府的密切关注,也成为社会议论的主题。 从“中国老龄事业发展十一五规划(2006-2010年)高层论坛”上
