It was about seven years ago. I had just picked up my three-year-old daughter from nursery. I was weighed down with shopping, and with my daughter’s things. We arrived at a pedestrian crossing and she pressed the button. In the distance, I heard alarms, told my daughter to wait and watched the police car approach.
Little did I know, as the green man flashed, that my daughter had begun to run into the road. I watched the police car speed towards us that’ s when you sounded your horn (喇叭）and waved wildly to me. My daughter was about a metre from the path of the police car, hidden from their view by your car.
I screamed her name and ran towards her. She stopped and was shocked by the rush of the police car as it sped past. She wondered why you had blown your horn, asking, “Why was that woman so rude?”，not realising that you had saved her life.
She wondered why I picked her up, and burst into tears. My legs gave way as I reached the other side of the road. I should have followed up my “wait” with a hand on her shoulder, or an explanation of why we were ignoring the green man this time, especially as I had in effect conditioned her to cross the road on the sight of the green flash.
I beat myself up for months, and still do, with flashbacks and horrible assumption about what might have been. But for you sounding your horn, seeing what I hadn’t seen, I would have been left a mother on the other side of the road, totally broken. I apologise for putting you in that position~I can imagine that it upset you, too. You saved her life and I am so very, very grateful.

China’s cancer researcher Zhu Chen, together with two French researchers Anne Dejean and Hugues de The, received Sjoberg Prize 2018 in Stockholm Concert Hall, Sweden on Friday.
“We used wisdom from both Chinese and Western medicine and offered a cure to one of the most deadly cancers，” Chen told Xinhua, “I feel that Chinese medicine has potential to contribute more to human health. There are no borders in medicine, because it struggles for benefiting all mankind. It’s a language of peace, and of development and progress.” Chen recalled the cooperation with the two French researchers for over 30 years.
This year’s Sjoberg winners have developed a new and targeted treatment for a specific form of blood cancer called acute promyelocytic leukaemia (急性早幼粒白血病). It was once one of the deadliest forms of cancer, but it is now possible to cure nine out of ten patients who receive the new treatment. The winners have made this revolutionary development possible by methodically mapping the molecular mechanisms responsible for the disease.
The prize is awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and is funded (资助）by the Sjoberg Foundation. The foundation, with a donation of 2.5 billion US dollars, was founded in 2016, and serves to promote scientific research that focuses on cancer, health and the environment.

“Thrilling” is the word repeatedly used by Jan Ramqvist to describe how he felt about participating in a nationwide mission. He was just 26 and a newly qualified traffic engineer working in the city of Malmo when the changeover took place on September 3,1967.
The day was officially known as Dagen H (H-Day). Its mission was to put Sweden on the same path as the rest of its continental European neighbours, most of which had long followed the global trend to drive cars on the right. As well as hoping to boost (提升）the country’s international reputation, the Swedish government had grown increasingly concerned about safety with the number of registered vehicles on the roads shooting up.
In the run-up to H-Day, each local municipality (市政当局）had to deal with issues ranging from repainting road markings to relocating bus stops and traffic lights, and redesigning bicycle lanes and one-way streets. Some 360,000 street signs had to be switched nationwide, which largely took place on a single day, with council workers joined by the military and working late into the night to ensure the task got done before H-Day formally revved into gear on Sunday morning.
But as H-Day finally dawned, the hard work all appeared to pay off. In safety terms, the project was declared a success almost immediately. As Swedes began their working week on the day after H-Day, 157 minor traffic accidents were reported around the country, slightly less than average for a typical Monday. Meanwhile, as well as being important for Sweden’s global reputation, the switch might potentially also have had other longer-term benefits such as increased trade and transportation from other parts of the continent.

I climb for all women
Between raising two daughters and working as a dishwasher at Whole Foods, the native of Nepal Lhakpa Sherpa just doesn’t have time for training to climb Qomolangma, known in the West as Mount Everest. 36 And she hopes to outdo herself this month again.
