Veronica Vorobet learned about caring in her home country of Romania by nursing her grandparents. In 2013,after their deaths, she moved to England to find a job using the freedom provided by EU (European Union)membership.
Vorobet, 36, is one of a quarter of a million care workers who are not UK citizens, a rising percentage of whom have come from the EU in recent years.They have become an essential part of a low-paid workforce that is constantly understaffed, with about 120,000 unoccupied positions.
Yesterday,she expressed disappointment with the announcement that there would be no special treatment for carers coming into the UK after Brexit -British exit from the EU.
“I want to see people treated the way I want to be treated and to make a difference in people's lives, making a feeling of home for everyone,” she told the Guardian. “The foreign workers are important in this. They are able to work under a lot of stress and long hours. In my country we are very close to our elderly people and that is what we show here. We try to be close to them and respect their wishes."
She said her approach was to treat residents as if they were her own grandparents and provide similar levels of “support and love.” When she arrived in the UK, Vorobet started as a junior care worker on minimum wage in a home for older people in Petersfield, Hampshire. Seven years on and having studied for an NVQ in health and social care, she is a deputy(副的) care manager at St Anthony 's residential care home in Watford,part of RMD Care. There she works alongside other Romanian people,and care workers from Indian, Sri Lanka and Kenya.
Her most recent trial has been keeping coronavirus out of the home, so far successfully. She said that given the difficulty of taking on care workers, European workers have helped create stability in the workforce. Staff turnover rates in adult social care currently stand at about 30% a year.

We have to make certain our limited money is well spent. But what should we spend our money on? A 20-year study conducted by Dr. Gilovich, a professor at Cornell University, reached a powerful and straightforward conclusion: don't spend your money on things.
The trouble with things is that the happiness they provide peters out. We get used to new possessions, and what once seemed exciting quickly becomes the norm. We keep raising the bar and always look for an even better one. Possessions, by their nature, cause comparisons. Gilovich has found that experiences deliver more-lasting happiness than things. Experiences become a part of our identity. Everyone's experience is unique. We are not our possessions, but we are the accumulation of everything we’ve seen, the things we’ve done, and the places we’ve been to. “Our experiences are a bigger part of ourselves than our material goods,” said Gilovich. “You can really like your material stuff. You can even think that part of your identity is connected to those things, but they remain separate from you. In contrast, your experiences really are part of you. We are the sum total of our experiences.”
Besides, we don't compare experiences in the same way that we compare things. It’s hard to quantify the relative value of any two experiences, which makes them that much more enjoyable. And expectation of an experience causes excitement and enjoyment, while expectation of obtaining a possession causes impatience. Experiences are enjoyable from the very first moments of planning, all the way through to the memories you keep forever. The temporary happiness achieved by buying things can be regarded as “puddles of pleasure”. In other words, that kind of happiness evaporates quickly and leaves us wanting more. Things may last longer than experiences, but the memories that remain are what matter most.

World No Tobacco Day is celebrated each 31st of May. The aim is to bring attention to the growing use of tobacco and its deadly effects. The World Health Assembly established the event in 1987. This year, special attention is being given to the harmful effects of tobacco marketing to women and girls.
The WHO says the tobacco industry has increasingly directed its marketing campaigns at women and girls. Study shows that women currently represent about twenty percent of smokers while tobacco use among girls is increasing. Data collected from 151 countries show that about seven percent of young girls now smoke. That compares with twelve percent of boys. In some countries, however, the rates are almost equal.
Almost 170 countries have signed an agreement called the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control which calls on those governments to ban tobacco advertising to the fullest to protect women.
