An article caught my attention this week. It claims that few parents these days tend to hire neighborhood teens to watch their kids. In fact, the article states that the average age of babysitters (代人临时照看小孩的人) in the UK has risen from 14 to 34 over the past several decades.
I worked as a teenage babysitter for years. At that time, I took up those jobs as they were economic to do so, but now I sec them as valuable experiences. The article reminded me of just how significantly babysitting influenced my worldview and my approach to parenting. It made me think that more teens should be involved in babysitting because it really does prepare them for life in a way that few other things can.
Babysitting makes everyone’s life easier. I gained many practical skills adapting to children. I discovered that the outdoor activities are the best way to wear out high-energy children and that reading books aloud is an excellent way to pass the time and that music makes an instant party. Babysitting reveals how other households operate. This is a fascinating, invaluable lesson. I had great conversations with the parents of children I babysat. Some parents introduced me to their favorite music, described their own jobs and interests, and showed curiosity about my schoolwork and life goals.
In a society where families are increasingly isolated (孤立的) from each other, where children are no longer raised by a “village” or community of caring individuals, hiring a teenage babysitter is a simple way to bridge that gap and it also gives that teen a chance to gain some independence. The next time you’re having a date night with your partner, don’t hesitate to call on that teen down the street and offer him or her a job. It could be the best thing for all of you.

Kindergarten represents a crucial environment in which children develop school-related skills and patterns of engagement. They form the basis for the development of later competence which is important for academic success. As for later academic skills, kindergarten achievements have been found to have great predictive value.
Given the long-lasting effects that kindergarten experiences have on later schooling, it is important to understand the factors associated with children’s learning and motivation during this time. The quality of teacher-student interaction has been found to be important in terms of many different academic and socio-emotional outcomes. However, much of the previous work in the field has focused on children in later grades in elementary school and has been conducted in the United States. Fewer studies have been conducted in other educational environments and in kindergarten specifically.
Some researchers investigated bidirectional links between the quality of teacher-child relationships and children’s interest and pre-academic skills in literacy and math in Finland. Participants were 461 Finnish kindergarteners (6-year-olds) and 48 teachers.
The results indicated that teacher-perceived (教师感知的) conflicts predicted children’s lower pre-academic skills in both literacy and math. It is possible that when children experience conflicts with teachers, the negative emotions attached to these conflicts are harmful to children’s engagement in learning and curtail their interest in academic tasks. It’s also possible that children experiencing conflicts are missing out on time for learning literacy and math, either because they become separated from instructional activities or because teachers have to spend more instructional time on behavioral management.The findings highlight the importance of kindergarten teachers being aware of how their relationships with children can influence children’s later schooling. Therefore, it would be important to develop pre-service and in-service programs and interventions to help teachers. Teacher education programs may also benefit teachers not only in academic content and pedagogical (教育学的) practices but also in strategies used to build supportive relationships with children.

Last March, a disaster hit Asia’s garment-producing (服装生产) countries. Major fashion brands cancelled orders worth more than $40 billion as a result of store closures and a severely weakened market caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. It destroyed the livelihoods of millions of garment workers who already struggle to get by on low wages.
As moral fashion activists, NGOs, and concerned shoppers realized what was happening, a campaign took root on social media, using the hashtag (话题标签) “Paytjp”. It wanted to make brands responsible. In the words of Ayesha Barenblat, founder of a consumer activist group called Re/make, the hashtag “made it very dear to the press and consumers that we were not asking for charity but simply good business”. The hashtag later changed into a more formal movement called PayUp Fashion. It hopes to maintain the pressure n major brands to revolutionize the fashion industry, once and for all. PayUp Fashion lays out some actions that fashion brands must take in order to build a garment industry that’s friendly to garment workers and the environment. It also maintains a Brand Tracker list of 40 major labels to see how quickly they move toward meeting these demands.
The movement went viral over the summer and won support of many people. Now, it has expanded the brands it tracks beyond just those who cancelled orders. What’s more, it has successfully pushed brands including Zara, GAP, and Next to pay at least $15 billion owed to garment factories.
However, its success is far from enough. It’s crucial to stay focused on what real transformative change means for the fashion industry. It’s not about using more
