Many students ask for advice about improving their English. There are three basic questions.
The first question is about real English. Li Hao from Hubei wrote, “I enjoy watching English films and listening to real English songs. But it takes a long time. What do you think?”
This is a great way to learn English! Talk about the film or song with your friends, and guess the meaning of the new words. Just enjoy yourself!
The second question is about speaking. Sam, from Suzhou wrote, “Our school has a foreign teacher. But I’m shy and can’t speak to her What should I do?”
When I visit China, lots of people in the street say, “Hello! How are you? Where are you from? Do you like China?” These are good questions to start a conversation. Many people are shy when they speak English, so before you begin, take a deep breath and smile! Smiling always helps.
The third question is about vocabulary. Oliver, from Anhui Province wrote, “I want to remember all the new words. I write them down, but I forget them quickly. What should I do?”
Try to remember eight or ten words a day. Write them on pieces of paper and place them in your bedroom. Say the words when you see them, and change them every day. And when you’re shopping, how about counting the English words, or saying the English names for everything you see?

Is it a tree? Is it a bear? If you're looking at a tree in the shape of bear, It’s a topiary(林木雕塑). A topiary is a tree or bush(灌木)that is trained into a shape. Growing a topiary garden takes both time and skill.
A topiary gardener should make a drawing first. The drawing shows the final shape that the gardener likes. The gardener then chooses a bush for the topiary. It may be one that was just planted or one that is already in place.
In June of the plant’s first year. The gardener looks for new leaves. When the leaves grow, it’s time to shape(给…造型) the bottom of the bush. It needs about five years. Once upon a time, there was a lovely garden. There was a tree with many leaves and some vegetables in the garden. Both the vegetables and the tree made the garden beautiful. The garden’s owner was very proud of this. But the tree and the vegetables didn’t like each other. The vegetables hated the tree’s shadow. The tree thought the vegetables drank all the water.
One day, the vegetables decided to use up all the water in the ground so that the tree would dry up. Then the tree answered back by refusing to shade the vegetables from the hot sun. Soon, the vegetables and the tree were all drying up.
The gardener was sad and stopped watering them. When he did that, both the tree and the vegetables really learned what thirst was. ◆Choose exercises that you like
Write a list of activities that you like. From the list, you can pick some that can help you to

13-year-old Usmaan arrived in Lebanon from Syria a few months ago. I found him living in an old Lebanese school that he and his family have been allowed to live in.
Usmaan left Syria, along with the rest of his family, because of the fighting. Usmaan showed me where he and his very large family slept and ate. It was one of the abandoned classrooms with some clothes on the floor to sleep on and a small gas stove where the few meals they had were made.
It was extremely cold but the small makeshift heater they had was off. They explained that fuel was too expensive and they just had to wear as many clothes as they could to keep warm.
Armaane, another refugee told me: "Sometimes we have to choose between using the fuel to cook our meals or heating the room." They had to leave most of their things behind in Syria so they don't have anything here to play with. There's no school for them to go to.
Families living at the abandoned school struggle to keep warm and get enough to eat.
"There's nothing to do here. Before, in my home in Syria I had friends and after school we would have picnics and play.
"But after the fighting started, after we came here, I lost all my friends and we have nothing to do."

Many teenagers like to play video games, but not many like to design them. Shireen Zaineb, a seventh-grader at the Milwaukee Montessori School in Wisconsin, US, has taken video games to the next level.
The 12-year-old girl designed a game called Discover and it got a lot of attention in the National STEM Video Game Challenge. More than 500 teenagers took part in the challenge, which began at the White House last fall. It was meant to help teenagers become more interested in science, technology, engineering (工程学) and math, also known as STEM.
Zaineb designed Discover, using the computer on her desk at school. Her family and friends helped her test the game while she was designing it. She says in her design paper that the game is an adventure with a story that leads players through different levels.
“ I think what makes my game fun is the storyline,” she writes. Zaineb’s game also teaches players about gravity through a series of jumping and exploring challenges. “I just wanted to make a game about science, and I thought that the most interesting topics in different subjects had to do with gravity,” Zaineb said. “Gravity is a topic that is good for all ages.”
She didn’t often play games before designing Discover, but now she really likes to play, she said. “I was trying to make it really good, so it took me a long time,” Zaineb said. “I enjoyed it. I think I want to make some more games in the future. I hope I can be a real game designer someday.”
