Lesson3 An unknown goddess 无名女神
Some time ago ,an interesting discovery was made by archaeologists on the Aegean island of Kea.An American team explored a temple which stands in an ancient city on the promontory of Ayia Irini. The city an one time mast have been prosperous,for it enjoyed a high level of civilization .House_often three storeys high_were built of stone .They had large rooms with beautifully decorated walls. The city was even equipped with a drainage ,for a great many clay pipes were found beneath the narrow streets.
The temple which the archaeologists explored was used as a place of worship from the fifteenth century B.C.until Roman times .In the most sacred room of the temple ,clay fragments of fifteen statue were found . Each of these represented a goddess and had ,at one time ,been painted .The body of one statue was found among remains dating from the fifteenth Century B.C,Its missing head happened to be among remains of the fifth century B.C.This head must have been found in Classical times and carefully preserved.It was very old and precious even then.When the archaeologists reconstructed the fragments ,the were amazed to find that the goddess turned out to be a very modern_looking woman .She stood three feet high and her hands rested on her hips .She was wearing a full_length skirt which swept the ground .Despite her great age,she was very graceful indeed ,but,so far,the archaeologists have been unable to discover her identity.

Today we’ll learn a story is about an archaeological discovery in Greece.In the story the archaeologists found clay fragments in an ancient temple.These represented the fifteenth statues of goddess which had once been painted .The body of one statue was found among remains from the fifteenth century B.C.Which it’s head was found among remains from the fifth century B.C.When the fragments mere reconstructed,they turned out to be a goddess which stood three feet high .Her hands rested on hips and she was wearing a full_length skirt .Her identity is unknown.
Now listen to the story first ,let’s look whether me can answer the question or not.How did the archaeologists know that the statue was a goddess ?

Sometime 指某一不确定的时间
Sometimes 为频率副词，“有时候”

‚.discovery 一词常与动词make搭配使用，后面常与about/in/of连用，
Eg:They made a new discovery in astronomy
他们在天文学上有了新发现

At a time 是表示“每次”之意

破折号内的often three storeys high 是对houses的插入进行说明。

regard.....as...认为。。。是。。。
see.....as....把。。。。视为。。。。
treat....as.....把。。当作。。。对待。
describe.....as...把。。。。描述。。。。
（4）.from...until 从....开始，直至。。。
同样的结构还有from...till..和from.... To....
From....until和from...till只可用来表示时间，但from...to 不仅可表示时间，还可用来表示地点。

.happen to 碰巧，恰巧，后用不定式，强调事件的偶发性。
Eg:I happened to be there when my mother arrived.
我妈妈到时，碰巧我也在那
‚happen to 后为人或物，往往指人或物发生不测。

.此句中的to find that .....从句用来说明产生amaze的原因，这类动词不定式常用与作补语的形容词之后。
‚.turned out to 是“证明是，原来是，结果是，后来成为”为系动词，其后的动词不定式，可省略，直接将主语补足语放在其后。
Eg:He has turned out (to be )a professor.
他后来成为一名很了不起教授。
ƒ.modern-looking 为合成形容词，由形容词/副词+现在分词，常见的有：
easy-going 好相处的
good-looking 好看的
well-meaning 善意的
hard-looking 工作努力的
(15) .She stood three feet high and her hands rested on her hips
stood 为系动词，three feet high 是表语，当动词后的形容词，名词等被用来描述和说明句子主语而非动词所表示的动作时，这样的动词称为系动词，除be动词外还有：
feel,seem,smell,sound,appear,look,taste,lay sit fall,get,go, turn.等

.be unable to do sth. 不能，无法。Unable 为补语形容词
Eg:I’m unable to go to Beijing
‚.enable 为动词，其后常跟人，再加动词不定式短语
“使.......能够”

enable sb.to do sth.
ƒ.disable 为动词，通常指由于疾病事故等所致而失去做事的能力。
The war disabled him
战争使他成了残疾。

Composition
After walking round the ancient city.the archaeologists discovered an ancient temple .This temple had obviously been a place of worship because it contained a sacred room On entering the sacred room the archaeologists found the clay fragments of fifteenth statues each of which was a goddess which had once been painted .
After this ,workmen began digging and soon discovered the head of a statue among remains dating from the body of this statue among remains from the fifteenth century B.C.The archaeologists carefully put the fragments together .They were astonished to find that the figure was a goddess .The goddess was a modern -looking woman ,She had her hands on her hips and she was wearing a full-length skirt .Although the archaeologist tried very hard to identity her,they were unable to find out her name .
