Sunday, 31 August
We’ve been in China for a month now. Dad, Mom, Harry and I moved to Tianjin on 25 August. We’re not very far from Beijing. Two days ago, we celebrated my 16th birthday. It was great celebrating in China; the only thing that was strange was the cake--here they’re not as sweet as the ones in New York. On Monday school starts—I wonder what it will be like.

On my first day I was looking around for a locker to put my books in. However, here all the students keep all of their books at their desks--we stay in the same classroom because apparently we don’t have to go from class to class--teachers e to us!
Today we selected teacher assistants for each subject. Their duties are to collect homework, make announcements, and do other stuff for the teacher and the students. It’s kind of a big deal here! Since I am from the US, I was asked to be the English assistant. I felt so proud but quite nervous at the same time because I wasn’t sure what I had to do, but I accepted the job anyway.
Friday, 3 October
Boy, what a week! Now we have nine classes every day, including the morning class, a bination of our American schools’ “Homeroom” and “Study Hall”. I think Chinese students work too much! I have to do my homework when I get back home. I don’t even have time to watch TV or surf the Internet like before. I sometimes miss New York and my school because we didn’t have to study so much. We had more time to hang out with our classmates and neighbors; here, besides their usual classes, students are involved in weekend classes in subjects such as English, Chinese and math.
I get a lot of attention, being from another country. Everyone wants to practice English with me! A really cute girl even asked me for my phone number on my second day and sent me a text message! I’m making a lot more friends now. I just need a lot of help to improve my Chinese. Some students want to do a language exchange program with me. Nice!

Nadam Fair(那达慕), meaning “entertainment” or “recreation” in Mongolian, originated in the early days of the 13th century and is a mass traditional Mongolian festival. A “Huli Letai” (big meeting) was held by Mongol leaders every month. Many activities were taken on during the meeting, such as making laws and regulations, appointing and removing officials, giving awards and penalties, and the large Nadam Fair. As recorded, in 1206 when Genghis Khan was elected as the Mongolian Khan, a grand Nadam Fair was held.
Since its birth, the “three skills” -- wrestling, horse-racing, archery - have been a necessary part of the Nadam activities. In the past, winners of the three sports would be given horses, camels, sheep, brick tea, and silk as prizes.
In modern times, more activities have been added, such as polo, horsemanship, track and field, and other ball petitions. The newly added contents turned the traditional national grand meeting to an auspicious, happy and effective one. Nadam held in Xilin Gol League is the biggest and has bee an important activity for the health and entertainment of the masses.
Nowadays, Nadam is always held in summer or autumn when the grasslands are beautiful and flocks and herds are ready for tallow. It often lasts for three to seven days. During this time, herdsman will e from all over in pletely new national costumes, riding their horses, carrying tent, all kinds of meat and milk products on their light wooden carts. While putting up the tent, people begin to boil tea and stew meat.
From ancient times, the “three skills”, wrestling, horse-racing and archery, have been used as standards to judge ability. Such activities can be performed any time and anywhere, since special fields, equipment or a fixed number of people are not necessary.
Mongolian wrestling is different from other forms by its rules, methods, uniforms and fields. There are no weight or age distinctions, nor fixed numbers. All wrestlers are matched by drawing straws or by respected judges. The game uses a single- elimination rule in that victory or defeat is determined once. The loser is not allowed to pete again. Half of the contestants will be eliminated each time. As soon as the judge gives an order to start, the opponents first shake hands to show respect to each other, and then begin to wrestle. There is no time limitation and the opponents can tick, pull, kick, trip, push and hold. The person who touches the ground with any part of the body above the knees is the loser.

Charles Dickens’ novel A Tale of Two Cities was set in the years before and during the French Revolution(1789—1799)．During its course，French revolutionaries brought down the empire and established a republic of free and equal citizens．
In reading the work，one sees that Dickens distorted some details of the French Revolution．At the beginning，Dickens notes that，in 1775，France was busy spending money．This mention of France’s spending touches briefly on what is perhaps the major cause of the French Revolution．
Before the revolution，the government often borrowed money because it spent more than it raised in taxes．The increased spending and borrowing made many people’s blood boil，yet Dickens focused instead on the nobility’s oppression(压迫 )and exploitation of the working class，including peasants，as the causes of the revolution．
The Marquis，one of the book’s characters，ill-treats and kills many people．Thus，he represents the nobles who mistreat the lower classes．One reviewer criticized this picture as an unfair representation of French society in the mid-1700s．The reviewer pointed out that the government would have punished nobles who mistreated or murdered．Nobles may have been guilty of other evils，however，such as not feeding the starving masses after bad weather ruined crops 1789．
Dickens’account of the storming of the Bastille(巴士底狱) fails to mention that the gang that stormed the prison was looking for bullets and bombs to use in defense against a possible attack by the king’s troops．Dickens does include some accurate details，however，such as the crowd’s finding only seven prisoners and freeing them and the pack’s executing(处决) the prison administrator and sticking his head on a post．The scene that the women knit(编织)as they watch the executions may seem to be an odd detail，but actually many women did knit stockings for the war effort as they watched the killing machine at work．
Dickens’descriptions of the steady stream of sentenced people into prison and the carts taking them to their deaths give readers some idea of the frequency with which officials jailed and executed people during the Rule of Terror，which lasted about a year．During the Terror，the government jailed(拘留) about 250 thousand people，tried(审判)and killed about 17 thousand，and executed about 12 thousand without a trial．Those executed included people who opposed the revolution，people who offended the revolutionaries（革命者），and even some revolutionaries．About 15 percent were members of the ministry or nobility．
