Why must we pay taxes? The answer is that the government needs money for many things, for example to pay its soldiers, sailors and airmen, to build roads, bridges, offices, schools, etc and to buy goods from abroad; and only the people of the country can supply the money. One of the most important taxes is ine-tax which a person pays according to the amount of his ine. Whether he is a businessman, a doctor, a lawyer, a shopkeeper, a miner, or anything else. This is called a “direct” tax, because it is paid in money direct to the government.
Another tax is paid on goods such as watches, jewellery, new clothes, tobacco, wine, etc, when they are brought into a country, such a tax is paid as part of the price of these goods if they are later sold in shops. We call it “indirect” tax, because it is paid indirectly through the shopkeeper.
People usually plain about having to pay taxes, but they forget that the money is spent on the things that they and their families need. We need policemen to catch thieves, to see that men obey the laws, to direct traffic, etc, and they must be paid what they earn; children need education and there must be schools and teachers; we want our streets to be kept clean, and the wages of men who do this kind of work have to be paid. Above all, the country must always be ready to defend itself against attacking enemies, and we cannot have an army without paying for it.
Taxes, therefore, cannot be avoided. We buy our own food and clothes and pay for our own amusements, but there are several things that the State finds the money for and that are necessary for us if our society is to continue. So we have no real cause to plain when we are asked to supply money to be spent for the good of ourselves and for our fellow-citizens.

Anvitha Vijay has built two educational apps and is working on a third. She aims to use her skills to help others.
Need an app for that? Anvitha Vijay, 9 , can build it. With the help of You Tube videos, the young techie from Melbourne, Australia, learned to code at age 7. Soon, she was trying her hand at making apps.
“When I first got my iPad, I was fascinated by all the apps on it,” she said. “It wasn’t long before I wanted to create my own.”
She built her first two apps with her younger sister in mind. Smartkins Animals helps children identify more than 100 animals and their sounds. Smartkins Rainbow Colors teaches kids colors. Each app has been downloaded thousands of times.
Anvitha's skills helped her to win a scholarship to attend a big tech conference hosted by Apple in San Francisco, California. There, she got tips from the experts. She went to workshops where she learned about the latest software for app building. All that training led to an idea for a third app. This one, called GoalsHi, inspires kids to practise good habits. Users are rewarded for achieving goals, such as eating their vegetables or practising the piano. Anvitha says the rewards are like getting a sticker for a job well down. “Kids can set goals with this app and get stars when they achieve them,” she says. “The idea is to empower and motivate kids to achieve one small step a day. ”
Anvitha's goal is to continue creating technology that helps kids learn while having fun. Cursive handwriting ( 草 书 ) may soon go the way of the card catalog and the film projector. Schools are moving to new curriculum standards that put more emphasis on typing skills. But not everyone is ready for the cursive alphabet to bee a relic. The Idaho legislature( 立 法 机 关 ) is considering a statewide cursive order.
As far as state representative Linden Bateman is concerned, losing cursive would mean the dumbing down of society. That's why the Republican from Idaho Falls has introduced a bill to require cursive in elementary schools.
“If we do not teach cursive handwriting, the day will e when people won't be able to read cursive handwriting,” Bateman says. “That means: Old diaries, old journals, old letters... the Declaration of Independence in its original. "
Idaho is one of 45 states, including Oregon and Washington, that have adopted a new set of national math and language standards called the mon Core. They establish expectations for each grade level. Keyboarding starts in third grade. Cursive handwriting is not included.
That slight has heated up a debate about the value of cursive, says Rich Christen, an educational historian at the University of Portland. Christen says, old documents aside, there aren't a lot of practical reasons any more for teaching cursive.
“But I think the argument can still be made,” he says. "I think that it’s an important way for students to be involved in an aesthetic (美学的) activity every day. And that would be a way for cursive handwriting to survive.
One scientist in Indiana found college students remember information better when they write it in cursive. The lawmaker pushing the requirement in Idaho says he's already received support from around the country.
