Passage 1

In the far northern regions of the North American continent, living conditions can be extreme and few people have been able to adapt to living there. One race of people, however, have been able to adapt - the Eskimos (爱斯基摩人). They belong to the same race of people as the native North Americans and some Asians, and like them, they have similar physical features - straight black hair, high cheek bones and wide faces.
Except for the Eskimos, most people would find living difficult in this part of the world. For much of the year, the land is one large blanket of ice and snow, and temperatures sometimes drop as low as - 51 degrees C. Even the land on the southern borders remains frozen most of the year. But in summer, when the sun begins to melt the uppermost layer of ice, the soil softens and many plants and flowers begin to grow. Trees, on the other hand, are unable to grow because the soil below this top layer remains permanently frozen (as deep as 300 meters).
In most places in the world, the length of day and night are nearly the same. But here, from the middle of October to the middle of February, it is dark except for the light from the stars and the moon. From the middle of April to the middle of August the sun is always shining, even at night’ For this reason, this region has been called “the land of the midnight sun”.
Most of the inhabitants live in small villages dotted along the coast. Each village may have only a few hundred living there and about 30 to 40 buildings, including shops, a church, a school and homes. Education has become increasingly important and children are encouraged ed only to learn new. information, but also to maintain their customs, culture, and languages. Those who do go on to high school usually must leave their small villages to attend school in larger communities.
Village homes are usually made of wood and have electricity and heat. Further to the north in Canada, homes are built by digging down into the frozen layer of earth and then constructed of earth, stone and some wood. The entry is actually an underground tunnel built lower than the floor of the house and covered with an animal skin to keep out the cold air.
The cold in this region makes it necessary to wear clothing layered year round’ The Eskimos originally wore clothing made mostly of animal skins, but today they use other more modern materials, such as wool, jeans and heavy cotton.

Mammals (哺乳动物) are a large class of animals with the same characteristics - they have a bone down the back, feed their young on the mother’s milk, are warm-blooded, and bear living young. Most mammals, like humans, dogs, cows and monkeys, have hair and live on land, but there are some that live in water. The most popular of these water mammals is the bottle-nosed dolphin (海豚).
The dolphin may be seven to eleven feet long and weigh 300 to 700 pounds. The easiest way to distinguish a bottle-nosed dolphin is to look at the curve in its mouth which makes it appear to be smiling.
Fifty to sixty million years ago in prehistoric times the dolphin was related to land animals that left the land to live in the sea. Because there is no recorded history of that time, no one knows why this happened, but through studying the dolphin now, scientists believe the dolphin descended from a grass-eating animal, much like the cow. Modern dolphins eat fish, yet their stomachs and bled are like those of animals that eat plants.
The dolphin’s ancestors, believed to have resembled a pig but with a strong, thick tail, seemed to be attracted to water areas where they searched for food. Over time, the animal’s form evolved through many changes that increased their adaptability for life in the water. These changes developed slowly over many years. Nature played the major role in what we see as the dolphin today, because the stronger and more fitted one form of dolphin was for living in the water, then that form was the one that lived. This process is known process is known as natural selection and happens in all forms of life. The fit survive, and those that aren’t, die.
No longer does the dolphin have four short legs the front ones have become flippers (鳍), fleshy limbs on the sides of their bodies that are used in steering through the water. These limbs still contain the bone structure of legs and feet. The back legs were not needed in the water, but there are still traces of the bones in dolphins today. Additionally, they no longer have hair and the overall shape of the dolphin has changed, as well. The body is more smooth with a big, broad, strong tail. The head has lengthened and the mouth has developed into a fish catcher. The nose has become a hole on the top of the dolphin’s head, making it easier for the dolphin to breathe air above the water. These changes have made the dolphin more suited for living in the sea.
