W: Yes, and so you increase your exposure to airborne viruses just when your body's resistance is already low from all the running around you.
M: So what can I do to ward off the flu?
W: Actually it's fairly simple.
M: Really?
W: Yes. Get plenty of rest, and eat well. That way your immune system will be boosted. And you'll be more able to fight off illness.
M: All these things make sense. But one more question. Aren't I bound to get sick anyway if there's an outbreak in the dorm?
W: Oh, you didn't mention you live in the dormitory. In that case, I'd also suggest you get immunized. The vaccine available prevents the three main types of influenza. Why don't you go to the university health center? The shots are free there.
M: I'll do it right away. It will be nice to feel well during the holidays for once.

M: Why? You just told me it's not serious.
W: It's not, but it does seem to be bothering you. Putting a bandage over the cut will keep the skin from drying and will help keep the skin together. If the skin stays together, the nerve endings won't be exposed, and the cut will hurt less.

Passage One
Everywhere we look, we see Americans running. They run for every reason anybody could think of. They run for health, for beauty, to lose weight, to feel fit, and because it's the thing they love to do.
Every year, for example, thousands upon thousands of people run in one race， the Boston Marathon, the best-known long distance race in the United States. In recent years there have been nearly 5,000 official competitors and it takes three whole minutes for the crowd of runners just to cross the starting line.
You may have heard the story of the Greek runner, Pheidippides. He ran from Marathon to Athens to deliver the news of the great victory 2,500 years ago. No one knows how long it took him to run the distance. But the story tells us that he died of the effort. Today no one will die in a Marathon race. But the effort is still enormous.
Someone does come in first in this tiring foot race. But at the finish line, we see what this race is about: not being first, but finishing. The real victory is not over one's fellow runners, but over one's own body. It's a victory of will-power over fatigue. In the Boston Marathon, each person who crosses that finish line is a winner.

That's how Shawn O'Neill looks back on the heart attack he experienced shortly after his 31st birthday. “I thought I was in perfect health," Shawn says. “I was never sick. I woke up feeling good every morning." Then on that fateful day in April 2002, he received a giant eye opener. He was working in his yard in Hixson and started having pain in his chest and arms. “I was pretty sure what it was, but I couldn't believe it could be happening to me."
The good news is that because Shawn recognized the symptoms and went immediately to Memorial North Park Hospital, he received the treatment he needed and the damage to his heart muscle was minimal.
“Advances in medicine make it possible for us to stop many heart attacks and keep people alive if they get to the hospital in time," says Dr. Kinsman Wright, medical director of Cardiac Services at Memorial. "We have technology to pinpoint blockage in the cardiac arteries and several options to open the vessels. And lifestyle changes and medications are helping people reduce their risk factors."
But Dr. Wright doesn't see any decrease in heart disease. "With people living longer, we're seeing different types of heart disease. We need to keep studying and fighting it on all fronts."

It is true that times are changing for the old people in Britain. But not all the changes are bad ones.
