At the beginning of every school year, I feared coming home with that first night of homework after a summer of fun. And I feared getting a teacher who had a long list of rules and a look that could kill a cat.
But there was always one part of beginning a new school year that I enjoyed. I always liked going to the store to arm myself with new school supplies（用品） even if I didn’t need them.
Sure, my pencils, erasers and notebooks from the previous school year may have had some life left in them. The pencils had a few centimeters of lead（铅） leftover（剩余物）. The notebooks had unused sheets of paper. But this didn’t matter. Every year, Dad would take us to Wal-Mart and let us buy the newest and coolest pencils, erasers and notebooks.
Besides school supplies, many parents also took their kids to buy new clothes and book bags just in time for school.
I guess many of my classmates and I must have shown up to school on the first day with something that smelled like a new car. We’d keep our new pencil bags and notebooks on top of our desk a little bit longer, just to make sure our classmates saw them.
All of this buying sounds a little environmentally unfriendly. But our parents seemed to think that buying these school supplies was worth it if doing so meant we’d work a little harder in school. Who knows? Perhaps we’d even start loving to do our math homework.
Leftover supplies from past years were always stuffed into the living room desk. Used clothes that had lost their appeal（吸引力） were sent to thrift shops（杂货店）, where they would be sold for 50 cents a piece.
Meanwhile, all of this new stuff did make us excited about going to school, at least for a week.

The population of Earth is still going up and scientists are worried that there will not be enough food for everybody in the middle of this century. One unusual plant from Madagascar, the Kalanchoe fedtschenkoi（玉吊钟），may help. It absorbs（吸收）carbon dioxide （二氧化碳）at night and it needs 10 times less water than food plants like corn. This means it can grow in the desert, according to Dr James Hartwell of the University of Liverpool.
Living in the desert
It is dangerous to eat this plant, but scientists can study two things about it: how it absorbs carbon dioxide at night when many other plants only do this during the day, and why it is so good at living in the desert, said Hartwell. There will be less good land for growing food in the future because deserts are increasing in size due to changes in the Earth’s climate.
Growing plants there will become more and more important.
Using genes（基因）
There are two possible directions to take this research in, according to Hartwell and his team. Producing a desert plant to eat will be difficult, but it may be possible to use the genes from this plant and put them into food plants like beans or cereals（谷类植物）. This will only happen if most people accept this type of technology, which uses genes from one plant inside another plant.
Fuel（燃料）from dry land
The other possibility is to grow this type of plant for fuel, said Hartwell. At the moment people are asking why good land is used to grow plants for fuel, and not for food. If we use deserts instead, then this problem will be partly solved. Some, but not all, of the plants needed for fuel can use desert land. The world’s climate is changing and its population is still increasing, but one strange plant could be an answer to our future food or energy needs.

For years, dentists have told us that flossing（用牙线剔牙）keeps our mouths and teeth healthy.
But, while nearly everybody has heard of the idea, it turns out that there isn’t much evidence(证据) to back it up.
“There’s little evidence that flossing works,” reported an article published by The Associated Press on Aug 2.
The news agency looked at 25 studies from the past 10 years that compared the conditions of teeth cleaned by brushing only to those that had dental floss used on them daily. They found that evidence that flossing improves dental health is “weak”.
A 2011 Cochrane “oral(口腔的) health” review of 12 studies on the effects of flossing found that they “were of poor quality and the results must be seen as unreliable”. According to the review, there was some evidence that flossing and brushing regularly did seem to reduce(减少) gingivitis(牙龈炎), compared to tooth brushing alone, but that evidence didn’t clearly say how much it reduced gum disease.
Without clear evidence, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2015-2020 have left out the sentence about flossing. According to law, the guidelines(指南) must be based on scientific evidence.
But before you stop using that floss, you should know that many experts think we should keep doing it anyway.
They believe that just because there is no evidence to show flossing is good for you, it doesn’t mean it isn’t good for you.
Joan Otomo-Corgel, a dentist with the American Academy of Periodontology, told National Public Radio that based on her own 32 years of practice, flossing does help. It gets rid of bacteria(细菌) that take up the space between teeth and sometimes cause health problems, according to Otomo-Corgel.
Wayne Aldredge, president of the periodontists’(牙周病医师) group, also thinks you should floss to help avoid gum disease. “It’s like building a house and not painting two sides of it,” he told The Washington Post. “In the end, those two sides are going bad quicker.”
After all, “If you don’t floss, you only clean 60 percent of your teeth,” US dentist Andrew Swiatowicz told The Huffington Post. “Imagine if you left 40 percent of your body unshowered(不洗澡的)…Wouldn’t you still feel gross?”
