Many people speak highly of BLADE RUNNER which marked a gigantic masterpiece in the history of science fiction movies. However, from my perspective, I do not regard BLADE RUNNER as a typical science fiction movie because conflict and emotion between human and the Replicants make me feel so realistic that I keep thinking about what is right and what is wrong under the criterion of human as well as the Replicants. Just as the actor Rutger Hauer who acted as a leader of the Replicants remarked for it, “Blade Runner needs no explanation. It just IZZ. All of the best. There is nothing like it. To be part of a real MASTERPIECE which changed the world's thinking. It's awesome. ”

For starters, there are several lines of caption in the screen informing audience of the background of this story,“Early in the 21st century, the TYRELL CORPORATION advanced robot evolution into the Nexus phase-a being virtually identical to a human--known as a Replicant. The NEXUS 6 Replicants were superior in strength and agility, and at least equal in intelligence, to the genetic engineers who created them. Replicants were used Off-world as slave labor, in the hazardous exploration and colonization of other planets. After a bloody mutiny by a NEXUS 6 combat team in an Off-world colony, Replicants were declared illegal on earth--under penalty of death. Special police squads--BLADE RUNNER UNITS--had orders to shoot to kill, upon detection, any trespassing Replicant. This was not called execution. It was called retirement.” The plot focuses on a group of recently escaped Replicants hiding in L.A. and the burnt-out expert BLAKE RUNNER, Rick Deckard, who reluctantly agrees to take on one more assignment to hunt them down. Unfortunately, Deckard falls in love with one of the six escaped Replicants, Rachael, a 22-year-old good-looking woman who carries a big owl. What impresses me o lot is the first time they meet each other when Deckard wanted to give a test to Rachael to make sure whether she is Replicant or not. Deckard said that Replicants were like any other machine - they were either a benefit or a hazard. If they were a benefit, it was not my problem. This word part totally appears indifference and cold blood in human beings that directly gives me a punch on my heart. They are Replicants, so they lose their rights to live a normal life just as human beings. They are exclusively utilized for dangerous or menial work on off-world colonies just like any other machine without love and care.

Later on, Deckard continues his investigation at the Tyrell Corporation to ensure that the test works on other NEXUS 6 models. Roy and Leon investigate a replicant eye-manufacturing laboratory and learn of J.F. Sebastian, a gifted genetic designer who works closely with Tyrell and Pris locates Sebastian and manipulates him to gain his trust. While searching Leon's hotel room, Deckard finds a photo of Zhora and a synthetic snake scale that leads him to a strip club where Zhora works. Deckard kills Zhora then he is attacked by Leon, but Rachael kills Leon using Deckard's dropped pistol. At another scene, Sebastian and Roy gain entrance into Tyrell's secure penthouse, where Roy demands more life from his maker. Tyrell tells him that it is impossible. Roy kisses Tyrell, then kills him as well as Sebastian.Upon entering Sebastian's apartment, Deckard is ambushed by Pris, but he manages to kill her just as Roy returns. As Roy starts to die, he chases Deckard through the building, ending up on the roof. Roy hoists him onto the roof, saving him. As Roy's life runs out, he dies in front of Deckard, who watches silently. Gaff arrives and shouts across to Deckard, "It's too bad she won't live, but then again, who does?" Deckard returns to his apartment and finds the door ajar, but Rachael is safe, asleep in his bed. As they leave, Deckard notices a small tin-foil origami unicorn on the floor, a familiar calling card that brings back to him Gaff's final words. Deckard and Rachael quickly leave the apartment block leaving a no end for audience. I guess maybe they try their best to escape to the north, which Rachael once mentioned it to Deckard, or maybe they are both killed by Gaff.

What is more, as a movie shot in 1982, special effects in it are generally recognized to be among the best of all time, using the available technology to the fullest. In addition to matte paintings and models, the techniques employed included multipass exposures. In some scenes, the set was lit, shot, the film rewound, and then rerecorded over with different lighting. In some cases this was done 16 times in all. The cameras were frequently motion controlled using computers. Many effects utilised techniques which had been developed during the production of Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

Last but not least, in retrospect to Chinese science fiction movies, of which most of Chinese audiences speak ill for poor box office records as a result of boring film scripts, bald shooting methods, babyish special effects as well as clumsy acting skills. Asmittedly, some of domestic science fiction movie do need reflection and improvement. However, we should notice the fact that inefficiency of Chinese cultural industry accounts for distrust in market demand. Several excellent film producers do not dare to produce something deeper and more realistic because of Chinese special policy limitation. I truly hope that on matter which feature attracts the largest audience, all producers, directors and actors could insist their efforts to create more memorable works. As long as the film industry advances towards further development, fans of movies are always ready to render their support.
