Furthermore, they try to grow through global cooperation by increase their access to world resources. This leads them to expand their foreign market position, in other words, to increase their market share. In overseas trade, the geographical gaps are great, and the transport multi-modal, that is to say, we must combine road, rail, sea and air in almost all cargo movements to some extent. Similarly the time gap is great between production and consumption. In bridging both the geographical gap and the time gap serious risks have to be run. And it is in this frameworks that the insurance under writers operate to carry the risks which otherwise would have to be borne by the producers. 38. The Bill of Lading is one of the most important documents and has three major functions: (1) It serves as a cargo receipt signed by the carrier and issued to the shipper or consignor; (2) It constitutes a contract of carriage between the carrier and the consignor; (3) It is a document of title to the goods, and the legal holder of the bill of lading is the owner of the goods it covers.
