Born in 1949, Diana Nyad took an early interest in swimming and was a swimming winner in her high school. For 38 years Stasia Dabrowski has served soup to Canberra’s poor people, without asking for anything in return. People all call her “soup kitchen lady.”
She recently celebrated her 91st birthday. But she is showing no signs of slowing down and is more active than most people half her age.
Every Thursday she gets up at five o’clock in the morning and drives a truck around Canberra to collect free food mainly from supermarkets. She comes home at eleven o’clock and starts to clean 180 kilograms’ vegetables, which takes her the rest of the afternoon. The soup will be handed out from a moving soup kitchen in the city’s central business area, which was started in 1979.
