This brochure offers a short introduction to St John’s College as you follow the tourist route through the
College. A full guide about the College, its buildings and its history, may also be purchased from the Porters’ Lodge.

First Court
Much of the College is made up of quadrangles(四方院) or “courts”. There are three running west to east from
the Great Gate to the river, known simply as First, Second and Third. First Court was built in 1511 to the south of
the old hospital and contained living quarters, the original chapel(小教堂), library, hall and kitchens.
The Chapel
The 19th century chapel was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, apart from the tower which was an
afterthought made possible by a former member of St John’s College called Henry Hoare, who unfortunately died
before he could pay for it all!
Chapel Court
The style of Chapel Court in the south range is Tudor, the west range Victorian and the remainder built by Sir
Edward Maufe in 1938-40. Part of the west range was transformed into a new College library in 1994. The arms
above the archway in the centre of the north range are those of John Fisher, carved by the famous sculptor, Eric Gill,
who favors Catholic methods.

There comes a time for every family when the tables turn and the parent has to answer to the child. Mine came
recently when my wife and I stayed with our elder son Nathaniel in Los Angeles—our first visit in several years
and the longest since he moved west in 2014. A whole week under his roof!

So I smilingly followed Nathaniel’s household commands.
Our role change gave me hope for his future parenting ability. We were walking along El Matador Beach on
our last afternoon and hit an extended patch of rocks-clearly the end of the line, I thought. But Nathaniel persuaded
me across one large stone to the next, patiently telling me where to place my arthritic(关节炎的) feet and hands as
ocean waves came close. I was terrified, but after a couple hundred yards we made it to a fresh sandy stretch.

An unusual northern rātā tree that looks like it is striding across an empty field has won New Zealanders’
hearts. The giant plant, which looks strikingly similar to an Ent from “The Lord of the Rings”, is centuries old and
has just been crowned New Zealand’s Tree of the Year, walking away with 42% of the public vote, which included
five other finalists(决赛选手).
Standing alone in the middle of a large farm on the west coast of South Island, the strange tree, which has been
nicknamed the “walking tree” because it looks like it’s striding across a field, is a northern rātā—one of New
Zealand’s tallest flowering tree species that can live for up to 1,000 years. Its roots and long, arm-like branches
make the tree look like an Ent—a fictional race of tree-like creatures that guard the forests of Middle-earth.
Measuring around 105 feet (32 meters) tall-around the same height as a seven-story building, the walking tree
is an “exceptional feature” and a “prime example of the remarkable trees that we New Zealanders are fortunate to
experience,” competition organizer Brad Cadwallader said in a statement.

Northern rātā trees are a type of tree that starts life growing on the surface of a host tree before growing aerial
roots that eventually reach the ground. The walking tree likely began life high up in the canopy(树冠) of its host,
living off air and rainwater before reaching the ground. Its unusual root layout was likely caused by how it grew
around its host tree, which probably died off centuries ago.
Northern rātā trees were once one of the most common species in the country’s forests. However, their range
has decreased over the last few decades and they are now listed as nationally vulnerable, according to the New

Zealand Plant Conservation Network.

Noise-canceling headphones are widespread nowadays, but scientists have found a way to take these devices
to the next level-by creating headphones that can focus on one external sound source and block out all other noises.
The technology, called “Target Speech Hearing (TSH),” uses artificial intelligence (AI) to let the wearer face a
speaker nearby and-after a delay of a couple of seconds-lock onto their voice. This lets the user hear only that
specific audio source, maintaining the signal even if the speaker moves around or turns away.
“We tend to think of AI now as web-based chatbots(聊天机器人) that answer questions,” said the study lead
author, Shyam Gollakota, professor of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington. “In this
project, we develop AI to modify the auditory perception of anyone wearing headphones, given their preferences.
With our devices you can now hear a single speaker clearly even if you are in a noisy environment with lots of
other people talking,” Gollakota said in a statement.
TSH follows on from research the same scientists conducted into “semantic hearing” last year. In that project,
they created an AI-powered smartphone app that could be paired with headphones, which let the wearer choose to
hear from a list of preset “classes” while canceling out all other noises. For example, a wearer could choose to hear
alarms, babies, speech or birds-and the headphones would single out only those noises and block out all others. To
use TSH, the wearer faces straight in front of the speaker whose voice they wish to hear, before tapping a small
button on the headphones to activate the system when positioned correctly.
For now, TSH can only enroll a single audio source, or a single speaker, at any one time, and it’s less
successful if there’s another noise of a similar volume coming from the same direction.
