Test1 One hot night last July, when our new baby couldn’t sleep,I tried everything I could think of: a warm bottle, several songs, gentle rocking.Nothing would settle him.Guessing that I had a long night ahead of me,I brought a portable TV into his room, figuring that watching the late movie was as good a way as any to kill the hours until dawn.To my surprise,as soon as the TV lit up,the baby quiet down, his little eyes focused brightly in the tube. Not to waste an opportunity for sleep,I tip-toed out of the room, leaving him to watch the doctors celebrate John Smith’s forty-fifth birthday. My wife and I heard no more of the baby that night ,and the next morning when I went into his room,I found him still watching TV himself. I found in my baby’s behaviour a metaphor(暗喻)for the new generation. My wife and I had given him some books to examine ,but he merely spit upon them. When we read to him,he did not feel comfortable. And so it is in the schools. We find that our students don’t read, that they look down upon reading and scold those of us who teach it.All they want to do is to watch TV.After this experience with the baby, however,I have reached a conclusion:let them watch it.If television is that much more attractive to children than books, why should we fight it?Let them watch it all they want! 21.The author brought a TV set into his son’s room to_____. [A]make his son stop crying. [B]spend the night watching TV [C]leave it to his son [D]make his son fall asleep as soon as possible 22.The baby’s reaction to the TV was____. [A] unexpected [B]exciting [C]awful [D]calm 23.From the passage we know that the author is____. [A]a doctor [B]an editor [C]a writer [D]a teacher 24.According to the passage, which is true of the school children? [A]They prefer reading to watching TV [B]They like watching TV only after school [C]They would rather watch TV than read books. [D]They like their teachers who teach them reading. 25.What do you think is the author’s attitude toward TV expressed in the last two sentences? [A]Angry [B]Serious [C]Ironical [D]Joking Text 2 To say that the child learns by imitation and that the way to teach is to set a good example over simplifies. No child imitates every action he sees.Sometimes, the example the parent wants him to follow is ignored while he takes over contrary patterns from some other examples. Therefore we must turn to a more subtle theory than “Monkey see, monkey do.” Look at it from the child’s point of view.He is in a new situation, lacking a ready response. He is seeking a response which will gain certain ends.If he lacks a ready response for the situation, and cannot reason out what to do,he observes a model who seems able to get the right result. The child looks for an authority or expert who can show what to do. There is a second element at work in this situation. The child may be able to attain his immediate goal only to find that his method brings criticism from people who observe him. When shouting across the house achieves his immediate end of delivering a message,he is told emphatically that such a racet(叫嚷)is unpleasant, that he should walk into the next room and speak quietly. Thus, the desire to solve any objective situation is overlaid with the desire to solve it properly. One of the early things the child learns is that he gets more affection and approval when his parents like his response. Then other adults reward some actions and criticize others. If one is to maintain the support of others and his own self-respect,he must adopt responses his social group approves. In finding trial responses, the learner does not choose models at random. He imitates the person who seems to be a good person, rather than a person whose social status he wishes to avoid. If the pupil wants to be a good violinist,he will observe and try to copy the techniques of capable players; while some other person may influence his approch to books most. Admiration of one quality often leads us to admire a person as a whole, and he becomes an identifying figure. We regard some people as models over a wide range of situation, imitating much that they do.We learn that they are dependable and rewarding models because imitating them leads to success. 26.The statement that children learn by imitation is incomplete because _____. [A] they only imitate authorities and experts. [B] they are not willing to copy their parents. [C] the process of identification has been ignored. [D] the nature of their imitation as a form of behaviour has been neglected. 27.For a child the first element in his learning by imitation is______. [A] the need to find an authority. [B] the need to find a way to achive the desired result. [C] the need for more affection from his parents. [D] the desire to meet the standards of his social group. 28.Apart from achieving his desired result, a child should also learn to____ [A]behave properly [B] attain his goal as soon as possible [C] show his affection for his parents. [D]talk quietly 29.Children tend to imitate their models_____. [A]who do not criticize them. [B]who bring them unexpected rewards [C]whom they want to be like [D]whose social status is high 30.”An identifying figure”(Line 2,Para.5)refers to a person_____. [A]who serves as a modle for others [B]who is always successful [C]who can be depended upon [D]who has been rewarded for his success. In the spring-time the grass, the flowers and the trees begin to look bright. The birds sing merrily, the sky is often clear and attractive, and as we go about on a bright day we seem filled with new life and vigor. At this period farmers are busy ploughing and in other ways evenness. The little lambs skipping about in the fields are always welcomed sight in spring. In summer the country is still more attractive. The trees and the flowers are now at their best, and the weather being warmer we may lie in the fields,on the hilly slopes,or by the side of the brook, and enjoy the fresh air and the sights and sound around.Driving in the country is very enjoyable, especially where the scenery is particularly fine. In autumn the trees, the flowers, and the fruit render the country again attractive. The pleasure of summer-walking,driving,and harvesting continues;and the rich brown tints of the leaves form a pleasing contrast to the brightness of spring and summer. In winter the country is dreary and quiet, and hence its pleasures are few.But even then it is enjoyable to watch the farmer as he attends to his cattle,or to see the trees when the twigs are covered with snow.
