When we were broke, down and out, do you think he ever brought anything home? Not he. If there wasn’t anything to eat in the house, he’d go off visiting aroud at farmhouses. They all wanted him. Sometimes he’d stay away for weeks, mother working to keep us fed, and then home he’d come bringing, let’s say, a hm. He’d got it from some farmer friend. He’d slap it on the table in the kitchen. “you bet I’m going to see that my kids have something to eat,” he’d say, and mother would just stand somiling at him. She’d never sa a word about all the weeks he’d been away, not leaving us a cent for food. Once I heard her speaking to a woman in our street. Maybe the woman had dared to sympathize with her. “oh,” she said, “it's all right. Life is never dull when my man is about.”

Lesson Three
Paraphrase
1. Newlyweds he figured, were the best prospects, ...
He thought that the newly married couples were the most probably customers who ere the most likely to by the subscriptions.
2. Dell placed local advertisements offering his customized computers at 15 percent off retail price.
Dell put up ads on local newspaper to sell his custom-made computers at the price which is lower than the retail price by 15%.
3. It was time to come to grips with the magnitude of what he had created.
It was time for Dell to deal with the problem brought by a great size of his business which was growing rapidly.

He credits his own success to the fact that Alexander and Lorranie Dell expected their three sons to learn and work hard - and draws a lesson from this. "The reason our schools are failing isn't because classroom sizes are too big. I can show you schools in Thailand where kids study in unbelievably crowded classrooms - and yet they're learning much more than our students. Why? Because they want to learn. Because they want to work hard. Because their parents and their teachers expect that of them."

Lesson Seven
Paraphrase
1. He was by nature a sociable, chatty man an he had reckoned that his action would infallibly produce conversation.
He was born to be such a kind of person who enjoyed getting along with others and making friends, and was talkative. And he had considered that his action would definitely start a conversation.
2. For all his appearance of indifference, the sight of a well-to-do gentleman pitching a suitcase from the window of a moving train had surprised him very much.
Though he pretend to be not surprised, when he saw a decent gentleman throwing a suitcase from the window of a moving train, he wondered/felt surprised.
3. The fellow was obviously counting on him for a violent reaction, and so Mr. Crowther made a point of not reacting.
The fellow was clearly expecting him to react violently, and so Mr. Crowther deliberately decided not to react, because he did not want to give that man this satisfaction.

Lesson Ten
Paraphrase
1. They possess him. He is their slave. In order to procure a quantity of false, perishable goods he has sold the only true, lasting good, his own independence.
They control him.He is ensalved by them. In order to get a large amount of material properties which actually has no value and can not last, he has given away his own freedom which is the only thing that is true and can last.
2. His life's aim was clear to him: it was "to restamp the currency": to take the clean metal of human life, to erase the old false conventional markings, and to imprint it with its true values.
Human life, in his opinion, is like clean metal, but marked with false values, and it is his intention to wipe out the false markings and print true values on it.

He was the most successful, important, powerful, r talked about person of the present time/at that time.
