PartⅢ Reading comprehension
No Matter What Happens
One of the most frightening and destructive phenomena of nature is a sever earthquake and it’s terrible aftereffects. Thirty years ago, an 8.2 magnitude earthquake almost flattened America , killing thousands of people in less than four minutes . In the midst of utter devastation and chaos , a father left his wife safely at home and rushed to the school where his son was supposed to be , only to discover that the building was as flat as a pancake .
After the unforgettably initial shock , he remembered that the promise he had to his son: “No matter happens , I’ll be there for you !” As he looked at the piles of ruins which was once the school , it looked so hopeless, so hopeless that tears streamed out of his eyes . However, he kept remembering his commitment to his son .
He began to direct his attention towards where he walked his son to class at school each morning . Remembering his son’s classroom would be in the back right corner of the building, he rushed there and started digging through the ruins. As he was digging, other mournful parents arrived, kneeling down and clutching the rubbles, crying out their children’s name .
Some well-meant parents tried to pull him off what was left of the school , moaning: “ It’s too late…They’re all gone…It doesn’t work…”
“Go home.. Come on…Face the reality…There’s nothing you can do…”
“Are you going to help me now?” to each parent he responded with just one question . And then , he continued to dig for his son , stones by stones .
“ Fires are breaking out , explosions are taking place everywhere. You’re in danger . We’ll take care of it . Just go home!” shouted the fire fighters who showed up and tried to pull him off the ruins .
“ Are you going to help now ?” the father asked.
“ You ‘re overwhelmed, sir. And it’s over. You’re endangering others. Go home ! We’ll handle it !” the policemen came and persuaded .
“ Are you going to help me now ?” he replied .
No one helped .
The father went on alone courageously . He needed to know the truth by himself: “ Is my boy alive or is he dead ?” 8 hours . . . 12 hours . . . 24 hours . . .36 hours . . .he dug down .Then in the 38th hour, he heard his son’s voice when he pulled out a large stone .
“Armand ! he screamed out .
“Dad! It’s me, Dad !” he heard that if you were alive , you would save me . And when you saved me , they would be saved . You promised ! No matter what happens , you will always be there ! You did it , Dad !”
“ What’s going on there ? How is it ? the father asked .
“There are 14 of us left out of 33,Dad. We’re scared, hungry, and thirsty . Thankfully you’re here. When the building collapsed, it made a triangle, and it saved us .”
“ Come out , boy !”
“ No, Dad ! Let the other kids out first, because I know you’ll get me ! No matter what happens, I know you’ll always be there for me !”

Bad Manners in Public
Although we consider ourselves as highly advanced beings living in a civilized society, bad manners can still be found here and there. For example, some cyclists run the red traffic lights, many passengers litter waste papers and plastic bags in public places, and some tourists scrabble in tourist attractions, let alone spit on the street .In the cinema, some audience talk loudly on cell phones in front of others.
I’m strongly against talking loudly in the cinema, for this behaviour shows no respect at all to others; what’s worse,it upsets the audience who are in the mood of having fun.
