Part Ⅲ Teaching Procedures
Step 1 Review
Show students some pictures. Compare them by using statement sentences. Help students review the words and target sentence of the last period.
Step 2 Lead in &Presentation
Some useful adjectives and expressions will be shown on the screen. Then I will ask like this “Who is smart? Please stand up. /Who is funny? Please stand up…”Each time, I will use two of them for students to compare. The question is “Is A smarter than B? /Is A as funny as B? /Does A work as hard as B?
This activity is to arouse students’ interest, students will be more confident by finding their strong points. Moreover, by comparing their classmates, they can know them better. Next, I will use four pictures to present the target sentences:
—Who is ___, A or B?
—I think ___ is … than ___.
Students are very familiar with the stars, so they will participate actively.
Step 3 Listening
Students will listen to a short material. Kimi and Angela who are from the famous TV program Dad, Where Are We Going are talking about their parents. Later, there will be three questions for boys and girls to compete.
This step is to practice the target language by listening. Students are crazy about the program and the two little stars. This can create a real situation for students to listen for specific words about comparatives.
• Angela: My father is thinner than my mother. My mother is funnier than my father. I love my mother and father. Kim, what about your parents?
• Kim: My mother is taller than my father. My father works harder than my mother. My father sings better than my mother. I love my father and mother, too.
1.Who is thinner, Angela’s father or Angela’s mother?
2.Who works harder, Kim’s father or Kim’s mother?
3.Who sings better, Kim’s father or Kim’s mother?
Step 4 Pairwork
“The lovely kids really know their parents very well, how about you?’’ First, students will compare their parents and check who is smarter, funnier, etc. Then work in pairs to ask their partner about his/her parents. Later, five pairs will act it out to the class.
This step is to practice the target language by speaking. Meanwhile, they can know their parents and their partner’s.
Step 5 Reading (Group work)
Students will read a passage about my parents and work in groups. Boys and girls will compete again to finish the task:
Who is smarter, my mother or my father? Why?
They should answer like this: I think ____ is ___than___, because….
Here is my reading material:
My father is a doctor. He is good to his patients(病人) and often smiles to them .He is good at math. He often helped me with my math when I was young. He is also good at telling jokes and he often makes us laugh. My mother is a worker and she is hard-working. She is the first one to get up. She cooks for us every day. The food is very delicious. After work, she likes going out to sing and dance.
This step is to train students’ comprehension ability. When they answer the questions, they can consolidate the target language.
Step 6 A Project
The autumn outing of our school is coming soon. Our destination is Longquan Park. We will walk there to have a picnic and hold an outdoor party. To have a safe and relaxing trip, we need five parents to help our teachers. We need a tour guide to tell us something about the park, a story-teller to tell us interesting stories, a cook to prepare food for us, a singer and a dancer to make our trip more interesting.
“Can your father or mother get these jobs? Tell us why.” The students who give the best reasons will get the job for their parents. Sample sentences will be like this: I think my mother can get the job as a tour guide, because she is smarter (than any other parent) and she is good at history and geography. I have prepared five certificates like this for the winners. When the winners come to get this, I will ask them like this, “Your mother/father is so great that she/he can get the job, so what do you want to say to them?” The winners must be very excited. They would say,“I’m proud of my father /mother, he is my hero. I love him/her. I want to be a person like him/her when I grow up.”
This step is for students to show their parents to others, which makes them feel proud. By stating the reasons, they can try to express themselves better. Then I will tell students,“Our parents are so wonderful, that’s how we define Family. Let’s say loudly together: Father and mother, I love you.”
Step 7 Summary
Summarize what we have learnt in this class.
Step 8 Homework
Try to find out more about your parents’ traits and write a short passage by comparing them. This is to help students consolidate the knowledge we have learnt and get them to care for their parents.
