Ability aims: Learn to talk about problems and give advice. C. Morality aims: 1. Deal with the problems calmly and wisely. 2. Be ready to help others with their problems. Ⅱ. Key and difficult points: A. Key points: the usage of the modal should / could. B. Difficult points: using the target language to talk about problems and give advice. Ⅲ. Teaching methods: The situation teaching approach, Audio-lingual method and task-based approach Ⅳ. Learning methods Cooperative learning, autonomous learning Ⅴ. Teaching aids: A multimedia computer, tape Ⅵ. Teaching procedure: Step 1 Greeting and lead in 1. The teacher and the students greet each other. 2 . Learn the key words and expressions. Step 2 Presentation 1. Present a chart as follows with a multimedia computer: Problems Advice 1. I don’t get enough sleep. 2. I don’t have enough money. 3. My parents don’t allow me to go out every night. You should go to sleep earlier . You can have a part-time job. You can talk with your parents. Then ask the students to tell you what they could do about it. 2. Write the words “could, should” on the blackboard. Work with a top student showing the class how to give advice using the words “could, should.” S: I have to study too much so I don’t get enough sleep. T: You should go to sleep early this evening. / Why don’t you go to sleep early this evening? Write some pieces of advice on the blackboard and have the class read aloud them after the teacher. Step 3 Listening practice Play the recording (1b) the first time for the students to listen and circle the problems they hear. Then check the answers in class. Step 4 Pair work Let students use the information in 1a to make their conversation in pairs according to 1c. Make sure they can give by using “Why don’t you…?.”Then call some pairs to act out their conversations in class. Step 5 Discussion 1. Divide the students into groups of four and then ask the students the problem: I have a friend called Peter, he argued with his best good friend last night. Can you give him some advice? And let the student discuss the problem and give some advice. A: He could write a letter to his friend. B: He should call him up. C: He should say he’s sorry. D: He could go to his friend’s house. E: He could give him a ticket to a ball game. 2. Then tell the students the usage of the modal should / could. Step6 Listening practice 1. Play the recording (2a) for the class to listen. Tell the students that Peter has some problems and his friend is giving him some advice and have students try filling in the blanks with “could” or “should”. 2.Call back the answers from the class. Help the class to understand that we can use “could” or “should” to give advice. 3. Play the recording (2b) for the class to listen and check how many they have matched correctly. Then check the answers. Step 7 Pair work 1. Have students read the conversations between Peter and his friend in 2c first. Then work in pairs to make a conversation according to 2a and 2b. 2. Then talk with the students about how to give advice using the target language . Step 8 Consolidation Let the students do some exercises so that they can say the target language correctly and fluently. Step 9 Summary 1. Have the class sum up what they have learned in the period. 2. Lead the class to red through the target language and explain that the word “should” is always used to ask for advice, but the words “could, should”, are used to give advice. Step1o Homework Suppose one of your pen pal from America has come to live in China with his parents. He wants to practice his Putonghua, but he is shy. What should he do? Do you have any good ideas? Write him a letter to give him some advice. Ⅶ. Blackboard design Unit4 Why don’t you talk to your parents? Section A 一.
