HOW TO BECOME A SUCCESSFUL READER

学情分析:高三1班为我校文科尖子班,共有学生55人。学生水平不均衡,两极差异较大。为了适应高考选拔人才,教案设计为中难水平。
很多老师放弃教授BOOK 9 和BOOK 10 ,而我主张运用教材中的新内容复习旧的知识点,以激发学生的学习兴趣、提高学生的英语水平和应试能力,为学生的终生学习打好扎实的基础。
(一)教材分析:
本单元的中心话题是“语言学习策略,如何改进听、说、读、写的技能”,内容涉及“如何成为一名成功的阅读者”、 “你怎样才能学得更好”、 “适用各类人群的学习技巧”、 “讨论阅读训练的最佳方法”、 “介绍一种新的学习技巧”、 “提出建议,改进学习方法” 等。语言技能和语言知识都是围绕这一中心设计的。
本堂课学习阅读部分一篇说明文,话题是“如何成为一名成功的阅读者”。 内容涉及以下方面:1)多读、多练习、熟能生巧。 2)享受阅读练习中的乐趣。 3)学会良好的阅读方法,即预测阅读内容、主动阅读、依阅读目的确定阅读方式、学会依据上下文猜测词义。 4)结论是用适当的方法通过大量的练习,我们就能提高阅读能力。
Ⅰ. Teaching aims:
1. Enable the students to realize that different language learning strategies are taken by individuals.
2. Introduce to the students several aspects of being a successful and efficient reader
(The students’ learning goals:
1. To improve the learning strategies and reading skills
2. To be able to write the headings and sub-headings for the passages
3. To revise the subjunctive mood )
Ⅱ. Teaching important points:
Get the students to know how to be a successful and efficient reader and work out a program to improve their reading
Ⅲ. Teaching difficult points:
Enable the students to use the information mentioned in the reading part to evaluate their reading and work out an improvement strategic program.

Cooperative learning, task-based learning

1. Greetings
2. Show the students’ learning goals:
. To improve the learning strategies and reading skills

Step Ⅱ Warming-up
1. Get the students to think about their reasons for learning English and express themselves and make a list of reasons for learning English. For example:
l to pass an exam
l to get into university for further study in English
l to read books in English
l for travel purposes
l to get a better job
2. Remind them of the famous saying: As is known, the quality of your English decides your social position!
3. Having written the list, go through the most popular reasons for learning English and ask what skills they will need in order to succeed.
Step Ⅲ Reading
1. Help the students to glance the whole passage to answer this question:
The text is mainly divided into_________ parts .
A. 3 B. 4 C. 5 D. 8
2. Get the students to think about the genre (writing style) of the text. (An expository.)
3. Get the students to read the title and the three pictures and predict what the author will tell us in the following passage, paying particular attention to the key words.
4. Assign Comprehending 2 on Page 34.
Ask the Ss to read the text on their own, keeping in mind that their reason for reading the text is to complete Comprehending 2. In order to discourage Ss from reading in more detail than they need at the end of the exercise, give them a set time ( 3 minutes ) for reading the passage and completing Comprehending 2 . Advise them not to look up unknown words in their dictionary, but to underline any they cannot work out the meaning for.
Cautions:
Please think about the techniques you use when you read different kinds of text.
Right methods can always
help improve the efficiency
of solving problems.
5. Get the students to discuss the answers. Spend some time checking them.
6. Get the students to sum up the main idea of the text by filling in the blanks.( 5 minutes for them )Then check the answers.

7. Get the students to discuss the writing characteristics
of the passage by filling in the blanks or answering the questions
The writing characteristics of the passage
The topic is introduced directly by___________________ “how to become a successful reader”. Is this the question the answer to which the students are eager to know? Does this arouse the interest of readers and lead them into the article?
Does the writer show any strategies for becoming a good reader? In _____________ part the techniques are introduced one by one in each parallel paragraph. This can help the students understand that these techniques are of equal importance in becoming a good reader. The last paragraph summarizes the text and responds to the title and strengthens the value of the strategies
8. Remind the students of the writing style of the text
The text is an expository that illustrates the strategies of becoming a good reader. The author analyzes the strategies by citing examples and drawing analogy. These methods make the text vivid and practical to the readers.

课后反思:整堂课设计及师生合作学习完成得比较理想。但Sum up the main idea of the text 设计难度比预期的大,学生不太得心应手,若改进为完形填空的模式,学生会做得更快更好。不过,还得加强填空题的训练,以适应大学学习。
