Her mom is in the backyard cutting the grass with a lawn mower(割草机). The lawn mower is loud, and Clara wishes her mom would play with her instead. But her mom says because it’s been sunny and then rainy and then sunny again, the grass has had everything it needs to grow. Now it is very long and has to be cut. Suddenly, the lawn mower turns off. Clara’s mom looks upset. Clara wonders what is wrong. Her mom bends over and picks something up out of the grass, and walks over to the porch. Clara’s mom has a turtle in her hand! The turtle is small, and as Clara looks closer. she sees that one leg is at an odd angle. “I think I broke its leg,” Clara’s mom says. “I’m really very sorry. Will you help me nurse it back to health?” Clara feels bad for the little turtle. Turtles move slowly, so it probably could not run away when it saw the lawn mower coming. White had two reasons for making this epic journey. First of all, he wanted to use the trip to raise money for charity, which he did. He raised £ 70, 000 for the British charity, Oxfam. White’s second reason for making the trip was to break the world record and become the fastest person to cycle around the world. He is still waiting to find out whether he has broken the record or not. White set off from Trafalgar Square, in London, on 19th June, 2004 and was back 299 days later. He spent more than 1, 300 hours in the saddle(车座) and destroyed four sets of tyres and three bike chains. He had the adventure of his life crossing Europe first, and then the Middle East, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and finally the Americas. Amazingly, he did all of this with absolutely no support team. No jeep carrying food, water and medicine. No doctor. Nothing! Just a bike and a very, very long road. The journey was lonely and desperate at times. He also had to fight his way across deserts, through jungles and over mountains. He cycled through heavy rains and temperatures of up to 45 degrees, all to help people in need. There were other dangers along the road. In Iran, he was chased by armed robbers and was lucky to get away with the little money he had. The worst thing that had happened to him was having to cycle into a headwind on a road that crosses the south of Australia. For 1,000 kilometers he battled against the wind that was constantly pushing him. This part of the trip was slow, hard and depressing, but he made it in the end. Now Mr. White is back and wants to write a book about his adventures. 30. What does the underlined word “epic” in Paragraph 1 most probably mean? A. Very slow but exciting. B. Very lonely and upset. It is a sad fact, especially when you consider how many families and homeless people are in hunger. When Laura saw her school dining hall throw away food that was not eaten at all every day, she came up with an idea. She started a project to help her school dining hall to give away uneaten food to homeless shelters (庇护 所) in her community. In the past three years, the same project has spread to other schools and some fast food restaurants throughout the city. The project is called Feed & Find, and has already fed thousands of people in her city. How does it work? Through an app, Feed & Find matches local homeless shelters with school dining halls and restaurants that have uneaten food to provide. When dining halls or restaurants have uneaten food left, they can use the app to share the information about the food. A truck driver working for the project is then sent to pick it up and take it to a shelter. Pretty cool, right? It’s not surprising that people in other cities have got in touch with Laura, hoping that she could have develop similar projects for their communities. Some people, however, have concerns about the safety of the uneaten food. They think such food may not be clean enough. Still, this project is a clever way to help solve the problem of food waste and it helps those in need. 34. The numbers in paragraph 1 tell us . How to listen in school? 41 One of the things you need to do is to make sure that your mind doesn't wander (漫游), It's easy to start thinking about other things, especially when you're not interested in the subject. 42 Next , listen for the main ideas. If you want to catch every little piece of information, you'll feel tired and bored. 43 Not only does this show respect to the teacher, it also helps prevent your mind from wandering. What can distract (使分心) you from listening? It might be a friend who is trying to pass you a note, or a group of kids who are talking loudly as they pass by your classroom. 44 Finally, you need to take notes because you will not remember everything the teacher said. You'll have to take down the notes so that you can review it after class. 45 Listening isn't always easy, but if you follow these simple ways, you'll be much more successful in your classes. A. Here
