Passage 1:
The Art of Marketing Online
The story took place in 1998, when online DVD retailers had cut down prices to as much as 50% blow retail. It was not good news for 28-year-old Rix, who started DVDE in 1995. online DVD retailers, including Rix’s 42-person company, were buying DVDs for no more than 35% off retail. “The other companies were losing money on every transaction”, Rix recalls.
Rix couldn’t go as low as his competitors, but cutting profits almost to the bone, he reduced prices to 30 percent off retail. That made him one of the highest-priced online DVD retailers. However, by concentrating on service and surfing the surge in DVD sales, he kept growing despite the markdown by powerful companies like A, DVDExpress and R.
One morning in 2000, R stropped selling DVDs, and then DVDExpress shut down. Everyone raised their prices. Today, Rix has raised prices back to 20% off retail, which makes him one of the lowest-cost online DVD sellers. He won the war at last!
第 3 页(共 5 页)
Even today, entrepreneurs would like to play with prices. One technique causing a bit of an e-commerce argument is variable pricing. This tactic has long been accepted in retail stores. Even within a chain, prices are often higher in wealthy neighborhoods. But it’s different online. In 2000, A refunded customers who said were charged differently for the same products.
