In 2017,the United Arab Emirates announced its ambition to colonize Mars within the next 100 years.But architects are already imagining what a Martian city might look like and planning to create it in the desert outside Dubai.
Mars Science City was originally scheduled to cover 176,000 square meters of desert——the size of more than 30 football fields——and cost approximately 135 million dollars.To create a space for Dubai's Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre(MBRSC)to develop the technology needed to colonize Mars,architects in Bjarke Ingels Group were asked to design a prototype of a city suitable for sustaining life on Mars,and then adapt it for use in the Emirati desert.
For this unique commission,the architects first had to overcome the immense challenges of creating a design to make the severe environment of Mars habitable.Mars has a thin atmosphere and no global magnetic field, so there's little protection from harmful radiation.Temperature is another problem—the average temperature on Mars is chilly————63 degrees centigrade.The thin atmosphere also means there's little air pressure,so liquids quickly evaporate into gas; despite freezing temperatures, an unprotected human's blood would boil on Mars.But according to Jonathan Eastwood,director of the Space Lab at Imperial College London,the biggest challenge in terms of sustained presence on Mars is not the engineering or scientific challenge,but the human and personal one.More research needs to be done to test the effects of isolation on mental and physical health of astronauts.
The MBRSC hopes that, in future,such research could take place in Mars Science City."This is going to be our platform where we can develop the science and the technology that will help us in our future missions to Mars," said Adnan AIRais,Mars 2117 Pro-gramme Manager at MBRSC.“We want to come up with a totally new facility that will help the international community."

Have you ever loved a destination but couldn't figure out why—or even a way—to express your feelings? That's my dilemma with Morocco.
In August,I traveled in a country that had long been on my wish list.I rode a camel, got lost in Medina, and ate a lot of couscous （蒸粗麦粉）.
I loved the trip. Our friendly guide introduced us to the helpful locals.I made friends with my tour mates and my roommate (which,on a tour,is a huge blessing).I loved being lost in the smell of different spices,and the chaos of millions of people and the dark red of the Sahara were all I wanted them to be.
There were many moments when I felt like a fish out of water and things didn't go my way.But I take pleasure in those moments because it's when you are pushed out of your comfort zone that you grow.Morocco lived up to all my expectations,but for some reason, my experience has been hard to express.Why?
One constant in my travels is that of a touchstone, one defining point where the trip all comes together and acts as a prism（三棱镜）for everything the journey represented.In Costa Rica,it was getting lost in a jungle.In Thailand, it was meeting those five people who changed my life.
I'm so inconsistent about Morocco be-cause I lack that touchstone.There's no big "whoa" moment.But I have thousands of little ones——staring at a million stars in the blackness of the desert,discovering new foods with some amazing Australians on my tour,and be-friending the fish sellers.

During a decline in tourism, one national park in Thailand has seen a dramatic rise in "visitors" recently. So many are the hermit crabs（寄居蟹）flooding into the otherwise empty beaches of Koh Lanta that shells（贝壳）for them to live in have become in short supply.
The Thai government moved quickly to ease the housing shortage,launching a public appeal for empty shells that netted over 200 kg. On December 5 these were distributed around the park in a ceremony.
Hermit crabs rely on shells to protect their soft bodies,moving to larger shells as they grow.On Koh Lanta and the surrounding smaller islands,their rapid increase seems to be a natural phenomenon,rather than directly related to the absence of tourists. But the shortage of shells may be man-made: pretty ones have long been gathered to be sold as goods.Crabs had begun to make do with potential death-traps such as plastic caps and bottles,
The shell drive was part of a government initiative to "regain the balance of nature","I have instructed all national parks to do what-ever it takes," says Varawut Silpa-archa,the minister for natural resources.His inspiration comes from the pause in tourism brought on by COVID-19.A ban on international visitors and the closure of national parks have helped nature recover,bringing endangered leatherback turtles back onto Thai beaches.In the coastal provinces of Phang Nga and Phuket, turtles have laid the largest number of eggs for 20 years.
The government has decided to try to copy the short break forced on it by COVID-19 in future.From now on,all national parks will be required to close for a short period during the off-season and to limit the number of tourists through a reservation system when they are open.Although such restrictions mean reduced earnings from tourism in the short term,in the longer run more parks may help to keep the tourists coming.
