iamreachingouttoyoubecauseineedyourhelp.wewanttoendgenderinequality—andtodothatweneedeveryonetobeinvolved.
thisisthefirstcaignofitskindattheun:wewanttotryandgalvanizeasmanymenandboysaspossibletobeadvocatesforgenderequality.andwedon’tjustwanttotalkaboutit,butmakesureitistangible.
iwasappointedsixmonthsagoandthemoreihavespokenaboutfeminism,themoreihaverealizedthatfightingforwomen’srightshastoooftenbecomesynonymouswithman-hating.ifthereisonethingiknowforcertain,itisthatthishastostop.
fortherecord,feminismbydefinitionis:“thebeliefthatmenandwomenshouldhaveequalrightsandopportunities.itisthetheoryofthepolitical,economicandsocialequalityofthesexes.”
istartedquestioninggender-basedassumptionswhenateightiwasconfusedatbeingcalled“bossy,”becauseiwantedtodirecttheplayswewouldputonforourparents—buttheboyswerenot.

apparently,iamamongtheranksofwomenwhoseexpressionsareseenastoostrong,tooaggressive,isolating,anti-menand,unattractive.
whyisthewordsuchanuncomfortableone。
iamfrombritainandthinkitisrightthatasawomaniaidthesameasmymalecounterparts.ithinkitisrightthatishouldbeabletomakedecisionsaboutmyownbody.ithinkitisrightthatwomenbeinvolvedonmybehalfinthepoliciesanddecision-makingofmycountry.
ithinkitisrightthatsociallyiamaffordedthesamerespectasmen.butsadlyicansaythatthereisnoonecountryintheworldwhereallwomencanexpecttoreceivetheserights.
nocountryintheworldcanyetsaytheyhaveachievedgenderrightsiconsidertobehumanrightsbutiamoneoftheluckyones.mylifeisasheerprivilegebecausemyparentsdidn’tlovemelessbecauseiwasbornadaughter.myschooldidnotlimitmebecauseiwasagirl.mymentorsdidn’tassumeiwouldgolessfarbecauseimightgivebirthtoachildoneday.
theseinfluencerswerethegenderequalityambassadorsthatmadewhoiamtoday.theymaynotknowit,buttheyaretheinadvertentfeministswhoare.andweneedmoreofthose.andifyoustillhatetheword—itisnotthewordthatisimportantbuttheideaandtheambitionbehindit.becausenotallwomenhavebeenaffordedthesamerightsthatihave.infact,statistically,veryfewhavebeen.
in1997,hilaryclintonmadeafamousspeechinbeijingaboutwomen’srights.sadlymanyofthethingsshewantedtochangearestillarealitytoday.
butwhatstoodoutformethemostwasthatonly30percentofheraudienceweremale.howcanweaffectchangeintheworldwhenonlyhalfofitisinvitedorfeelwelcometoparticipateintheconversation。

becausetoday,i’veseenmyfather’sroleasaparentbeingvaluedlessbysocietydespitemyneedinghispresenceasachildasmuchasmymother’s.
i’veseenyoungmensufferingfrommentalillnessunabletoaskforhelpforfearitwouldmakethemlookless“macho”—infactintheuksuicideisthebiggestkillerofmenbetween20-49;eclipsingroadaccidents,cancerandcoronaryheartdisease.i’veseenmenmadefragileandinsecurebyadistortedsenseofwhatconstitutesmalesuccess.mendon’thavethebenefitsofequalityeither.
wedon’toftentalkaboutmenbeingimprisonedbygenderstereotypesbuticanseethatthattheyareandthatwhentheyarefree,thingswillchangeforwomenasanaturalconsequence.ifmendon’thavetobeaggressiveinordertobeacceptedwomenwon’tfeelcompelledtobesubmissive.ifmendon’thavetocontrol,womenwon’thavetobecontrolled.
bothmenandwomenshouldfeelfreetobesensitive.bothmenandwomenshouldfeelfreetobestrong…itistimethatweallperceivegenderonaspectrumnotastwoopposingsetsofideals.
ifwestopdefiningeachotherbywhatwearenotandstartdefiningourselvesbywhatweare—wecanallbefreerandthisiswhatheforsheisabout.it’saboutfreedom.
iwantmentotakeupthismantle.sotheirdaughters,sistersandmotherscanbefreefromprejudicebutalsosothattheirsonshavepermissiontobevulnerableandhumantoo—reclaimthosepartsofthemselvestheyabandonedandindoingsobeamoretrueandcompleteversionofthemselves.
