Unit 2 Let’s play sports! Comic strip and Welcome to the unit I. Teaching aims and learning objectives By the end of the lesson, students are expected to be able to: 1. know some popular sports; 2. talk about their favourite sports; 3. know the importance of sports. II. Teaching contents 1. New words and phrases: walking, really, bowl, time, tennis, volleyball, enjoy, go swimming 2. New structures: Do you often play football? I often play football after school. What about you? I walk to my bowl many times a day. III. Focus of the lesson and predicted area of difficulty Talk about their favourite sports with their partners. Give a report on their groupmates’ favourite sports. IV. Teaching procedures A Welcome to the unit Step 1 Lead-in Show the five friendlies T: Today we’ll begin a new unit, unit 2. What’s the topic of this unit? S: ... T: Yes. Do you like sports? S: ... T: Have you ever watched Beijing Olympic Games in 2008? Look, here is a poster of it. Do you know the five characters? S: ... T: Yes. They are the Friendlies—Beibei, Jingjing, Huanhuan, Yingying, Nini. They all look happy. Do you know why? S:... T: Yes. Because they love sports. They all have their favourite sports—the sports they are good at. Do you want to know about them? Let’s have a look. 【设计意图】用学生比较熟悉和感兴趣的北京奥运会福娃作为导入,使其迅速进入本单元体育运动的这个话题,又为接下来介绍各种常见体育运动做好铺垫。 Step 2 Presentation 1. Show the names of the sports What sport does Beibei like best? (Beibei likes swimming best. His favourite sport is swimming.) Jingjing loves seven kinds of sports. Which sport does Jingjing like best? (Yes. Jingjing likes baseball best. Baseball is His favourite sport. ) Huanhuan is ood at two kinds of sports. What are they? (You are so clever. Huanhuan is good at football and baseball.) What is Yingying’s favourite sport? (Tennis and table tennis.) Of all these sports, which of the sports does Nini like best? (Badminton, volleyball and softball.) What sport do Beibei and Nini both like? (Rowing.) 2. Finish Part A T: Friendlies love sports, so do the students at Sunshine Middle School. Let’s look at the pictures in Part A on page 19. Do you know what sports they like? (Ask four students to check answers and then read together.) 3. Pair work T: Do you like sports? What sports do you like best? Let’s work in pairs and find out what sports your partner like. You can talk about these sports. Read after me first. (tennis, sailing, boxing, diving, baseball, badminton, shooting, swimming, weighting, softball, basketball, fencing, table tennis, volleyball, football, rowing) A: What sports do you like? B: I like ... What about you? A: I enjoy/like/love.... 4. Learn the dialogue (1) Answer the questions. T: Just now we talked about sports. Our friends Amy and Simon are also talking about it. Listen to their conversation and answer two questions: How often does Amy go swimming? (She goes swimming every week.) What sport does Simon like best? (He likes football best.) (2) Read after the tape sentence by sentence. (3) Explain a phrase: every week. T: Every week, we can also say once a week. 一周两次,twice a week. 一个月三次,three times a month. 一天许多次,many times a day. Read together. (4) Read in roles. 【设计意图】通过看福娃运动图片,让学生说出常见运动的名字,呈现顺序从单词到词组到句子,既学习了新单词,又涉及到本课重点词组和句型,把单词放到句子中学习,帮助学生更好得掌握单词的用法。这一环节简单易懂,可以使其轻松融入进课堂,同时又为下面话题的引出,做好相关铺垫。 Step 3 Activity Group work: a report on your groupmates’ favourite sports T: Everyone has his or her favourite sport. Would you please work in groups of four and talk about your favourite sports. There should be a reporter in each group to give us a report at the end of the discussion. Here is a sample for you. My groupmates are... A likes....He/She plays/goes...every week/twice a week. B's favourite sport is.... He/She.... C enjoys.... He/She.... I love.... We all love sports. Ask three groups to give their report. 【设计意图】由于前面已经做了大量的语言铺垫,包括运动名称,时间频率的表达,学生可以在这一环节有话可说,顺畅地进行语言输出,锻炼他们的口头表达能力,并体现人人爱运动的情感价值目标。 B Comic strip Step 1 Presentation 1. Watch and answer T: So we all love sports. What about our friends Eddie and Hobo? Do they love sports? Look, what’s in Hobo’s hand? He has a football in his hand. I think he likes football very much. Do you think so? Then what about Eddie? What is his favourite sport? Now let’s watch the video and answer the questions. What is Eddie’s favourite sport? (He likes walking.) Does Eddie really like walking? (No, he doesn’t. He likes eating. So he walks to his bowl many times a day.) 2. Read after the tapes 3. Listen, read and answer T: Now let’s read after the tape sentence by sentence, pay attention to the pronunciation and intonation. While reading, please think about the question: 4. Read in roles and act it out 5. Fill in the blanks Eddie says he l____ sports because he likes w______. He tells Hobo that he walks to his b____ many times a day. In fact, he doesn’t r_____ like sports at all. He just likes e______ food. 【设计意图】用Hobo拿足球的图片作为导入,让学生猜测Hobo和Eddie最喜爱的运动,引发学生兴趣。接下来通过观看视频和跟读录音分别回答一个问题的形式,帮助学生充分理解漫画内容,第一题的答案在前两幅漫画中,后一题的答案在后两幅漫画中。然后通过分角色朗读,为表演做铺垫。最后设计了一个由漫画改编的短文,帮助学生巩固重点词汇。 Step 2 Conclusion T: Boys and girls, sports are good for our health. We should love sports and we will be healthy and happy. I hope you can enjoy sports and enjoy life. Thank you. 【设计意图】通过书本学习,延伸到学生的生活,对他们的生活态度进行一定的引领。 V. Homework 1. Recite comic strip and part B 2.
