  教案只是设计的结果，备课才是教学设计的过程，反映出那种动态的教学构想的思维流向。所以探讨英语课堂教学设计，首先必须研究英语教学备课。英语教案设计的科学性，首先取决于英语教师备课的科学性，就是要坚持英语教学备课的科学性、目的性、针对性、计划性和预见性原则。英语教师一是要熟悉《国家英语课程标准》，明确要求，领会精神。二是要了解学生，教学的缘起和归宿就是教会学生学，英语教师的职责不仅是 “to teach our students English” 而且应是 “ to teach our students how to learn English”。要明白学生需要学什么，怎样学，就必须了解学生。三是要钻研教材，整体把握教学内容，明确教学目的要求，把握教学重点、难点。四是要确定教法，通过研究教材，科学处理教学内容，精心设计教案。现以 “WHAT IS A HEALTHY DIET ?”  课堂教学设计为例：
I．指导思想：
1．坚持以学生为中心，以任务为主的教学原则（Learner-centered, task-based learning）；
2．创造使用英语的机会，“学以致用”，贯彻英语学习的交际性原则（Communicative-learning）；
3．教师的作用：设计者、研究者、组织者、促进者、协调者。
II．课堂教学步骤：
Step One: Presentation
1. Showing a lady ( or a gentleman ) who is rather fat through multimedia and also
one who is slim and making a comparison between the two
“ Which body shape would you like to have? ”
2. “What did you have for breakfast, lunch, supper and between meals?”
Showing all the foods Ss mentioned and some more.
“ What’s your favorite food? ”
“ What’s a healthy diet? ”
3. Telling Ss what is to be learned
Enabling Ss to know how to keep them from getting fat by having a healthy diet
Step Two: Practice
1. Listening to the tape of the text ( with books shut )
2. Reading the text
3. Answering some questions about the text
4. Summarizing the main idea of the text
Step Three: Production
Task: You’re invited to give a lecture to some fat people, who try their best to lose weight. Please discuss it in small groups and write an outline of the lecture and then make a speech.
Step Four: Assignment
Get well prepared for the lecture and try to give the lecture next period.
在英语课堂教学活动的设计过程中，教师必须牢记教学是人的活动，无论是教师还是学生，都是英语课堂教学活动的主体，人的因素应当成为英语课堂教学设计的基本依据。要想取得英语课堂教学的成功，教师首先应该解放思想，更新观念，用先进的教学思想统帅教学方法。英语教学改革，归根结底就是教学思想的改革。其次，教学目的决定教学方法，教学方法为教学目的服务。英语教师必须注重通过教学使学生获得基本的语言运用能力。再次，英语课堂教学设计还要受到教学内容以及学生年龄和心理特征等多种因素的制约。此外，教师要善于自我设计，扬长避短，发挥创造性。
