21.(6分)I was in the middle of a sweet dream when a noise startled me. Bam! Bam! It sounded like a hammer pounding on a tough nail. Bam! Bam! BAM! Who could be hammering at three in the morning? It must be Charlie again, making another invention.
Just as I was putting on my slippers and clothes, the noise changed. I sat at the edge of my bed and listened. Tick! Tick! Tick! It reminded me of my first wristwatch. Its regular pace had always helped me fall asleep.
I started dozing off, dangerously leaning to the left, when the ticking stopped. it was now replaced by a buzz, similar to the noise coming from a beehive in midsummer, only louder. I shivered. “I’m allergic to bees! Even just thinking about it or hearing a bee-like sound makes me swell.
“That’s it!” I should, now wide awake. “I can’t take it anymore!” I marched to the next apartment and knocked. My neighbor immediately opened the door. His curly brown hair was sticking up every which way. He wore baggy striped pants and a loose raspberry shirt.
“Hi, there, Lucy! What’s up?” he asked.
I pointed at my noiseless watch. “Do you know hat time it is?”
He grabbed my arm and glanced at my timepiece. “Oh, my! I didn’t realize it was that late. I’m busy working on a machine that can cure insomnia(失眠). It’s almost finished. You want to see it?”
I should have known. His last invention was supposed to annihilate bad smells, but it was powered by rotten eggs.

23.(8分) The alarm sounds. Students swing their backpack over their shoulder, board the school bus, make their way to their homeroom and the bell rings— school is back. But for more homes in America, school looks more like students waking up, making their way to the dining room or home office, setting up laptops and learning in the comfort of home.
Virtual(虚拟的)schooling, described as “a public school that offers only instruction in which students and teachers are separated by time and/or place, and interaction occurs via computers and/or telecommunications(电信)technologies”, has increased over the past decade. According to the National Education Policy Center, enrollments(注册人数)in virtual schools was 278,518 between the 2015 — 2016 school year and the 2016 — 2017 school year increased by 17,000.
For Arizona Virtual Academy, a full-time online public K-12 school, they use K12 Inc. curriculums. K12 Inc. serves students in all 50 states and more than 100 countries with digital learning platforms and technology, providing online education. “We always are improving our platforms and the technology that we use to make sure that we’re keeping up with the changing trends, not only with education but also with technology,” Dr. Kelly Van Sande said. Another piece of new technology they’ve rolled out is a new app where parents can find virtual schools available in their area.
Carrie Faulkner chose to enroll two of her children in Arizona Virtual Academy. She says they’ve done schooling online in Chicago, in California, at restaurants and on her cousin’s floor in Kansas. “It doesn’t matter whether he (her son) is on the couch, in his bed or at the kitchen table, he can do schooling wherever he wants to,” Faulkner said. “I wish they had it for me back when I was in school. 24.(8分)The year 2117 will be an eventful one for art. In May of that year in Berlin, the philosopher-artist Jonathon Keats’ “century cameras”— cameras with a 100-year-long exposure (曝光)time—will be brought back from hiding places around the city to have their results developed and exhibited. Six months after that, the Future Library in Oslo, Norway, will open its doors for the first time, presenting 100 books printed on the wood of trees planted in the distant past of 2017.
As Katie Paterson, the creator of the Future Library, puts it: “Future Library is an artwork for future generations.” These projects, more than a century in the making, are part of a new wave of slow art intended to push viewers and Participants to think beyond their own lifetimes. They aim to challenge today’s short-term thinking and the brief attention spans of modern consumers, forcing people into considering works more deliberately. In their way, too, they are fighting against modern culture—not just regarding money, but also the way in which artistic worth is measured by attention.
In a similar fashion, every April on Slow Art Day, visitors are encouraged to stare at five works of art for 10 minutes at a time—a tough task for the average museum visitor, who typically spends less than30seconds on each piece of art.
Like the Future Library, the century cameras are very much a project for cities, since it’s in cities that time runs fastest and the pace of life is fastest. “Since I started living in a city, I’ve somehow been quite disconnected,” Anne Beate Hovind, the Future Library project manager, who described how working on the library drew her back to the Pace of life she knew when she was growing up on a farm in her youth, told The Atlantic magazine.
1、According to the first paragraph, what will NOT happenin2117?
A.A camera which was produced 100 years ago will be exhibited.
B.The Future Library will be0pen to the public for the first time.
C.Photos with a 100-year exposure time will be developed and exhibited.
D.Books printed on the wood of trees planted in 2017 will be displayed.
2、What can we learn about today’s people’s attitude toward works of art?
A.They consider works deliberately.
B.They spend little time on Works.
C.They spend much money 0n works.
D.They stare at works for 10 minutes at a time.
3、What is the purpose of the wave of slow art?
A.To advocate creating works of art slowly.
B.To protect works of art from being damaged.
C.To promote works of art for modern culture.
D.To encourage people to pay more attention to works of art.
4、How would Anne Beate Hovind feel about the city life?
A.It’s discouraging
B.It’s dull
C.Its developed.
D.It’s busy
25.(10分)Imagine a cat that does not need someone to clean up after it keeps an older person company and helps them remember to take their medicine. That is the shared dream of the toy maker Hasbro and scientists at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. The researchers received a $ 3-million-dollar award from the National Science Foundation for a special project. They want to find ways to add artificial intelligence, or A.I., to Hasbro’s “Joy for All” robotic.
The cat has already been for sale for two years. Though priced over 1000 dollars, it sold quite well. It was meant to act as a “companion” for older people. Now the project is aimed at developing additional abilities for the cat. Researchers at Brown’s Humanity-Centered Robotics Initiative are working to decide which activities older adults may need the most. They hope to make the cat perform a small number of activities very well. Such activities include finding lost objects and reminding the person to take medicine or visit their doctor. They also want to keep the cost down to just a few hundred dollars.
It is an idea that has appealed to Jeanne Elliott. Her 93-year-old mother Mary Derr lives with her in South Kingstown. Derr has dementia( 痴 呆 ). The Joy for All cat that Elliott bought this year has become a true companion for Derr. The cat stays with Derr and keeps her calm while Elliott is at work. Elliott said a robotic cat that helps her mother to remember to take her medicine and be careful when she walks would be greater.
The researchers are trying to learn how the improved cats will complete helpful activities and how they will communicate. They say that they do not want a talking cat, however. Instead they are trying to design a cat that can move its head in a special way to successfully communicate its message. In the end, they hope to create an exchange between the human and the cat in which the human feels the cat needs them. By doing so, the researchers hope they can even help prevent feelings of loneliness and sadness among elderly people.
1、What’s the purpose of the project?
A.To relieve the pain of the elderly. B.To promote the sales of a medicine.
C.To invent a robotic cat for the elderly. D.To help make the robotic cat smarter.
2、C
