Chapter 4 The world of numbers
Listening & Speaking

l TheAnalysis of the Text
1. Background on the reformation of curriculum, this text book emphasizes much on cultivating students’ interests of learning English by using materials in our real daily life. And it also encourages the communicative and cooperative way of study.
2. This chapter is a very essential unit, not only because the topic of numbers is a common used one in almost all the English examications, but also because it is an important elements in our daily life.
3. Listening and Speaking skills about numbers are always the focuses and difficult points in English language teaching and learning.
There are 5 sections in this chapter:
Reading, Listening, Language, Speaking, Writing. In order to address the needs of my students more effectively, I would like to adapt the text into 4 parts:
Reading——needs 2 teaching periods(TP).
Listening & Speaking——needs 1 TP
Language——needs at least 2TP
Writing——needs at least 1TP

I. Analysis of the Students
They have known——1. the names of different kinds of numbers;
2. how to read out those numbers;
They may not be able to——
1. recognize the English expressions about numbers in our daily life by listening.
2. do some simple calculation presented in English.
II. Teaching Aims
1. Enable the students to recognize different kinds of numbers in our daily life by listening.
2. Enable the students to do some simple calculation.
III. Teaching Focus and Difficulties
1. Focuses:
a. different kinds of numbers in everyday life;
b. simple calculations;
c. listening and speaking skills about numbers;
2. Difficulties: developing students’ listening and speaking skills about numbers.
IV. Teaching Aids and Methods
1. Aids: some pictures; multi-media computer
2. Methods: task-based method, communicated method, group cooperate method
V. Teaching Procedures
Step 1: Lead-in (1 minute)
Ask the students to talk about numbers.
T: Where can we see numbers in our daily life?
Aims and effects
Greeting and lead to next step.
Step 2. Pre-listening (3~5 minitues)
1. Show some pictures
2. Write down the numbers & do a match.
3. Prediction of Quiz A
Aims and effects
Arouse students’ interests
Practicing the language in listening material
Preparing for the Quiz A.
Step 3 While-listening (15~20 minutes)
1. Do quiz A in the text book.
2. Check the answer.
3. A transitional activity
Sence 1: In the Shopping Mall—— buy things
Mr. Li wants to buy a book and a pen. The book costs 58 yuan, and the pen costs 30 yuan. He gives the saler 100 yuan. What is the change?
Sence 2: Going to the airport——what time to go
The flight for shanghai will leave in 30 minitues, and it’s 8:20 now. When will the plane leave?
Sence3:On the plane——ask height
There is a girl sitting next to Mr. Li on the plane. She asks Mr. Li how tall he is. Mr. Li says he is 178 cm. The girl says he is 40 cm taller than her. Then how tall is the girl?
Sence4: In friend’s house——divide cakes
There are 12 pieces of cakes in Mr. Li’s house. They should be divided among 2 kids and 4 other people. Then how many pieces of cakes each person can get?
4. Do quiz B in the text book.
5. Check the answers and make an evaluation.

1. lead to learn the new word “change(找零)”

Evaluating students’ work to help them correct the wrongs.
Step 4 Post-listening (5 minitues)
1. Show the tapescript for students and let them read it in pairs.
2. Pair work (optional)
Circumstance:
There is a new grocery opened near our school. You want to have a look and buy something. Please work in pairs and make a dialogue.
Examples:
A: Can I help you?
B: Yes, I’d like to buy 2 notebooks.
A: 1.5 yuan for one.
B: So they cost 3 yuan. Here is 5 yuan.
A: Thank you, and here is 2 yuan for the change.
Aims and effects
Help students correct the wrongs and drive them to speak out.
This activity is optional. If the time permits, it can strengthen students’ communicative skills in the topic of numbers.
Step 5 Speaking (8~10 minutes)
1. Group work
Circumstance:
Your school received a gift of 35,000 yuan from Mr. Tang, an old student of the school. His instructions are:
• the school must use the money to buy three different things;
• a group of students must decide the three things to buy.
It is the Speak-up in the text book Page 53.
2. Invite 2 or 3 groups to show their work and give proper evaluations.
Aims and effects
Enable students do the calculation in our daily life and teach them to be a person that is good at managing money matters.
Step 6 Summary (1 minitue)
Today, we have learned many types of numbers that we can see in our daily life. Some of them are fractions, decimals,…. I hope you can pay attention to the numbers in every life, and try to read them out from time to rime so that you can grasp what we have learned more effectively.
Homework:
Ask the students to do the following things after class.
1.Preview the Language part of this Chapter;
2.Exercise book P43-44.
