Unit5 Why do you like pandas? (Teaching design) Section B (2a-2c) Reading Zhulin Middle School, Qichun Zhang Qiang (Collia) I. Teaching Aims 1. Knowledge Objectives ⑴ Function: To train students’ reading skills. ⑵ Key Vocabulary: save, symbol, flag, forget, place, water, danger, cut, down, tree, kill, ivory, over, Thailand, Thai, get lost, (be) in great danger, cut down, (be) made of, etc. ⑶ Target Language: ① We want to save the elephants. ② The elephant is one of Thailand’s symbols. ③ Our first flag had a white elephant on it. ④ But elephants are in great danger. ⑤ We must save the trees and not buy things made of ivory. ⑷ Structures: Why / What / Where questions. 2. Ability Objectives: ⑴ To train students’ reading skills. ⑵ To train students communicative competence. 3. Moral Objectives: ⑴ To raise students’ interest of learning English. ⑵ To arise the sense of loving animals and protecting them. II. Teaching Key Points 1. Key vocabulary in this period. 2. Target language in this period. III. Teaching Difficult Points 1. Reading practice. 2. Improve students’ reading ability. IV. Teaching Methods 1. Communicative teaching method. 2. Task-based teaching method. 3. Group work. V. Teaching Aids PowerPoint, video watching, music listening, pictures. VI. Teaching Procedures Step1 Leading-in 1. Greeting. 2. Let students watch a short video about animals in danger and answer some simple questions. 3. Talk with your partner about the animals you think are in great danger. Intention: 1. Strengthen the interaction between the teacher and students by greeting. 2. Stimulate students’ interest in English learning and let them know some familiar animals in danger and how to help them. Step2 Presentation Show the main words of this period. Intention: Learn new words first and help students understand the passage well. Step3 Fast reading 1. Listen and choose the best title. 2. Read fast and find out the topic sentence of each paragraph. Intention: Lead students to pay attention to the content of the passage by getting to know the title and the topic sentence of each paragraph. Step4 Detail reading 1. Read again and fill in the chart. 2. Complete the mind map according to the passage. Intention: 1. Understand the details of the passage exactly by filling in the chart, such as, Where, What, Why, How, When, etc. 2. Learn to use the mind map to find the details of the passage. Step5 Practice Complete the sentences according to the passage. Intention: Check students’ understanding and learning of important phrases. Step6 Retell the passage Lead students to retell the passage. Intention: Consolidate the basic knowledge this period included key words and phrases and the understanding of the passage. Step8 Enjoy a video Intention: Arise the sense of loving animals and protecting them. Step9 Blackboard design Unit 5 Why do you like pandas?
