London Olympics silver medalist in women's epee, Britta Heidemann, is probably better known to Chinese audiences as "Xiao Yue".

The 29-year-old athlete has more than a decade of close ties with China.

Rob has more.

Britta Heidemann is a well-known German athlete. She first visited China at 11, spent 3 months as an exchange student in Beijing at 15 and has competed more than 30 times in China.

Xiao Yue won her championship in women's epee at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and now, 4 years later, she grabbed a silver medal in London.

"I just finished 5 really tough rounds today, and I am excited to get a silver medal."

"When I was on an exchange with a Chinese family, the father of my host family called me Xiao Yue, because their daughter's name was Xiao Yang, symbolizing the sun. The meaning of my name is moon, and he said that, in China, the sun and the moon are two in one."

At 15 that Xiao Yue met the Chinese female epee athlete Li Na, and both are now stars in the epee circle. More than a decade of friendship ties the two together. Xiao Yue commented that they are opponents in the arena but close friends outside the game.

"We feel we are opponents in the game and friends outside the game, and I believe there is no problem with that."

In the eighth-finals, Li Na met Heidemann on the playing field. The match was 13-13 and ended with a winning blow from Heidemann.

"We are old friends and have played many games together. Although I am happy that I won today, I'm sad we met so early."

Xiao Yue says that she is fond of Hutongs, Chinese cuisine and The Art of War. She shows her affection for Beijing.

"I have been to China more than 30 times. I love its ancient traditions which Chinese people should protect. And Europeans are crazy about Chinese hutongs which represent Chinese culture.

Xiao Yue graduated from the University of Cologne, majoring in economics, and she is also a famous fencer in Germany. She enjoys working as well as fencing.

"I haven't had any problems until now because I really enjoy training while working. Besides, this is good for my brain. Sports helps me concentrate."
