Enable the Ss to write and article on this debate. Target Language: Debate, issue, competition, in charge, topic, argument, reply to , summarize, profitable, donate, existence, embryo, justified, transfer, ethically I suggest that medical cloning is very important of curing serious illnesses that at present have no cure. I would like to suggest that medical cloning is not as simple as issue as my colleague claims. Greetings 2. Check the homework and ask the Ss to speak out their opinion about the medical cloning Step 2 Reading task Ask Ss turn to page 58 and assign today’s work--- debate. Firstly ask them their opinion about debate, whether they’ve seen any TV debate. (College student’s debate, one chairman or two, four members each group) Ask the Ss to read the debate rules and then a set of questions: What is the definition of debate? A debate is an activity in which students can discuss two sides of an issue. There is a chairperson to charge i . Tell me the process of a debate in your own words The leading debater who supports the topic speaks first, then another one who disagrees with the topic speaks, then other people take turns to give a free discussion. Towards the end of the debate, the last speaker of each side will summarize the arguments that have been made to support their point to view. In our textbook there is an example of debate, read the topic carefully and discuss the questions with your partner. And I will divide you into two teams. One side agrees with the medical cloning and the other side is against the medical cloning. Then show the questions. Give students 6 minutes to prepare their answers. Team A: 1. what’s their argument? 2. Two reasons for medical cloning 3. Do you agree with them? Why? Team B: 1. what’s their argument? 2. Two reasons against medical cloning. 3. Do you agree with them? Why? Step 3 Speaking task “Just now, we learned how to organize a debate, now it’s our turn to continue the debate. The topic of our debate is “should we clone?” Now choose the team you agree with.” Divide the whole class into four gruos, two agree and two disagree. To begin this debate, I’ll give you some information about clone. You can choose what you need. During the speech, you can make notes so that you do not forget what you want to say. In our debate the person who speaks last must summarize your ideas. Here are some tips for you. Show the following Center on the subject Organize main ideas that support your point of view List your own idea Make a conclusion Show the following Why should we use cloning? Notes for debating: Argument for cloning: 1) Cloning will be beneficial to humans, For example, if a couple can’t have children, cloning could help give them a child; 2) We could use cloning to cure illnesses. Arguments against cloning 1) healthy risks form mutation of genes 2) emotional risks 3) against nature 4) risk of abuse of the technology 5) Cloned animals get ill and die quite young; 6) People are afraid of that scientists will create sands of copies of the same person 7) Cloning is dangerous because scientist may create monsters by mistakes. Step 4 Writing Imagine that you are the reporter on a local newspaper and you have been asked to write an article on this debate. To do this you must mention both sides of the argument. Remember to make a large main heading and then a small heading below it. Write around 250 words. Organize your writing in this way: Paragraph1: the topic of the debate and who won Paragraph2: the ideas of the winning side Paragraph3: the ideas of the other side Paragraph4: conclusion and your reaction to the debate, together with any idea you feel they left out. A sample version: Should Medical Cloning be Allowed A Debate at Xinhua Middle School Yesterday there was a very exciting debate at Xinhua Middle School about whether medical cloning should be allowed or not .After a lively discussion a vote was taken and the side arguing for medical cloning won. The arguments for medical cloning were very strongly put by the team supporting the motion. They argued that serious illnesses and people who w losing their ability to move or think could be helped by medical cloning. They explained that the procedures would be safe, quick and with no problems for the patients. They quoted that 67% of American citizens are for it to support their idea. Their arguments were very convincing. The arguments put by the team opposing medical cloning were less strong. They argued in two ways. The first reason was that the procedures were not yet secure. Their second reason was that it took many tries and many potential animals had to be killed to produce one useable embryo for research. They explained that man European countries don’t allow medical cloning research because of this. They quoted Pope John Paul Ⅱ. But their arguments were not so convincing. At the end of the debate the audience we left with a feeling of hope. They realized that diseases that seem terrible today may be able to be cured soon. Many people were excited and happy when they left they Hall .The writer of this article was among them!
