Practice OneThe Prevalence of Western HolidaysMany young people in China today prefer Western holidays to traditional Chinese festivals. Christmas is now celebrated by the younger generation all over China, and it has become especially popular as a romantic holiday for boyfriends and girlfriends or young married couples. Valentines Day is also extremely popular, and even Halloween is being celebrated now.This phenomenon has actually developed quite naturally in recent decades due to our educational systems focus on English study and therefore on English-speaking cultures. To many students, Western culture has become a symbol of self-expression and freedom from restraint. Celebrating Western holidays has become a way for students to express their love of something different from traditional Chinese culture, and to have fun together with their own generation.In my opinion, its fine for students learning English and studying English-speaking cultures to celebrate Western holidays with their teachers and classmates. However, the way I see it, unless the young people later go abroad to live in those cultures, there is no reason for them to continue to celebrate them. We Chinese should hold on to our traditional festivals, the festivals which we have celebrated for centuries.Practice Two My Thoughts on the University Arts FestivalFor our universitys arts festival, I think that the university should hold open competitions and auditions for anyone who wants to take part in the festivals exhibitions and performances. This would not only increase general interest in and appreciation for the arts, but would also be a good way for our university to show its support for the arts. This arts festival is an excellent opportunity to remind everyone that arts are important for everyone to appreciate and take part in, regardless of major.I think that there should be general, open auditions and competitions in all the major arts. There should be categories for painting and sculpture; classical, folk and modern dance; and instrumental and choral groups, both large and small. The judges should be joint committees made up of both faculty and students, both experts in the field and novices. Arranging the festival in this way will, I believe, give our student body a greater enjoyment of the arts, a break from studies and a fuller appreciation for what it means to be human.One Way to Solve the ProblemTo deal with the air pollution caused by vehicles in cities is a challenging job. My suggestion is to produce vehicles powered by solar energy.Compared with mineral fuels such as gasoline, solar energy is inexhaustible in supply. The growth of cities and increase of vehicles call for more supply of energy, but there is a limit to the reserve of mineral fuels. So, solar energy is with its endless supply is one of our solutions to energy crisis. The second advantage of solar energy is its cleanliness. Traditional vehicles operating on gasoline give off exhaust, causing damage to human health and polluting the air. From the perspective of environmental protection, solar energy is a much better choice. After the new technology becomes economically feasible, the sky over cities will be brighter, and the air will no longer be a threat to our health.Because of the two benefits of using solar energy as a new fuel, we should spend more money on the research which can make our dream come true.Practice ThreeCity ProblemsNowadays, millions of migrant workers flock into cities in search of jobs and better living. However, with the sharp rise in the urban population, many problems arise in the development of cities.Firstly, cities become more and more crowded, putting much pressure upon transportation, housing, sanitation, education, employment and so on. City services and facilities have been strained to a breaking point. Secondly, a growing number of private cars emit a huge amount of carbon dioxide, leaving the air mercilessly polluted. What is more, the city is also threatened by an increase in crime. There is not a single day passing without the report of someone being robbed, kidnapped or even murdered.Last but not least, city-dwellers are not only separated form the nature but also isolated from each other, even not knowing the name of their next-door neighbor.All these problems have harmed the attractiveness of the city. More and more people may seek to live in the suburbs if there isnt any improvement.Practice FourOn Holiday ReformSome people are of the opinion that the Spring Festival holiday should last until the Lantern Festival, a total of 15 days. They point out that a longer holiday would make it possible for more people to return to their hometowns to celebrate the festival with their families. In addition, in a time when many young people are turning to Western holidays, we should be emphasizing our Chinese traditions to strengthen our cultural ties with each other.Others think that there is no need to extend the holiday. They point out that the year is already full of national holidays; to extend the Spring Festival holiday to 15 days would result in great financial loss for the whole country. There is no reason, in their opinion, why people cannot work while still celebrating until the Lantern Festival.In my opinion, in this time of weakening cultural and family ties, lengthening the Spring Festival holiday to 15 days would be wise. The longer holiday would give us Chinese more time to remember and enjoy our cultural traditions and strengthen family relationships, and thus strengthen our entire country.
