Is death penalty essential for the society to control violence?
Opinions on whether death penalty is essential for the society to control violence vary from person to person. Some people think that it plays an important role in deterring crime, since people know that if they are convicted they can be sentenced to death except those who make up their mind to revenge on someone.
Others, however, think that death penalty is barbaric and belongs in the past and it should be abolished. From their point of view, life imprisonment without parole is just as effective a means of preventing crime.
My view of this matter falls between the two extremes. Personally, I am more in favor of the importance of death penalty to violence control. I hold this attitude because I believe that death penalty does more good than harm to society. As an iconic form of punishment, death penalty serves as a warning to the public. People might be daunted by the thought of death penalty and give up committing a crime. In other words, the existence of death penalty does not so much to punish the criminal, but to deter potential offenders. It is true to say that death penalty is cruel and sometimes is a violation of human rights, but it doesn’t mean it is of no use and should be abolished. I firmly believe that in very rare instances, and only for the most heinous crimes, death penalty is as a just punishment. So what can be exactly judged as a death penalty is of essence. Besides, it is advisable that people should cultivated with virtue, in that law and morality are complement each other and most people believe that good heart is the best law. So when people use law to suppress the crime, they should also use morality to cultivate the public and correct their mistakes.
In a word, death penalty is of great significance for the society to control violence. In the meanwhile, moral education is also a good way to deter violence.
