Restaurants in Europe, the United States and Japan are testing technology to let diners order their food direct from a screen at their table instead of depending on a fellow human being to note their choice.
Besides cutting costs, companies that sell the “e-menus” argue the bytes-for-bites (点击) way has a new value that can attract younger customers, and different photographs of steaks and desserts attract diners to order more. It also could attract the TV dinner. How about a computer game dinner?
“It’s about impulse-buying,” said Adi Chitayat, Conceptic’s CEO. “If a person starts looking at pictures of chocolate cake, the chances are that he’ll order it.” Frame, a restaurant in Tel Aviv with the system, is said to have its sales on tables with the e-menu increased. Customers often call ahead to book seats with screens, manager Natalie Edry told Reporters.
At one of the e-menu tables, IT worker Gil Uriel and his young family felt interested and excited as they checked out pictures of the dishes on offer and argue over desserts. “It’s more visual (直观),” says Uriel, as his children could have their own choices of dishes. “We can still choose, we can still argue —but it’s much easier when we can all see it.”

My wife and I used to feel that it was impossible to be a true friend to someone whose name we didn’t know. How wrong we were! Years of Sunday-morning bus trips through the city with the same group of “nameless” people have changed our thinking.
Before the bus takes off, we all join in a conversation: where’s the silent woman who sits at the front and never replies to our cheery greetings? Here she comes. Her worn clothing suggests she doesn’t come from a rich family, but she always takes an extra cup of coffee for the driver.
We get smiles from a Mexican couple as they get on the bus hand in hand. When they get off, they’re still holding hands. The woman was pregnant late last year, and one day her change of shape showed that she’d given birth to the child. We even felt a little proud at the thought of our extended family.
For many months, our only sadness lay in our being unable to establish the same friendship with the silent woman at the front of the bus. Then, one evening, we went to a fish restaurant. We were shown to a table alongside someone sitting alone. It was the woman from the bus.
We greeted her with friendly familiarity we’d shown all year, but this time her face softened, then a shy smile. When she spoke, the words came out of her lips with difficulty. All at once we realized why she hadn’t spoken to us before. Talking was hard for her.
Over dinner, we learned the stay of a single mother with a disabled son who was receiving special care away from home. She missed him very much, she explained.
“I love him… and he loves me, even though he doesn’t express it very well,” she spoke in a low voice. “Lots of us have that problem, don’t we? We don’t say what we want to say, what we should be saying. And that’s not good enough.”
The candles lighted up on our tables. Our fish had never tasted better. But the air grew pleasant, and when we parted as friends—we shared names.

You either have it, or you don’t --- a sense of direction. But why is it that some people could find their way across the Sahara without a map, while others can lose themselves in the next street?
Scientists say we’re all born with a sense of direction, but it is not properly understood how it works. One theory is that people with a good sense of direction have simply worked harder at developing it. Research being carried out at Liverpool University supports this idea and suggests that if we don’t use it, we lose it.
“Children as young as seven have the ability to find their way around,” says Jim Martland, Research Director of the project. “However, if they are not allowed out alone or are taken everywhere by car, they never develop the skills.”
Jim Marland also said that young people should be taught certain skills to improve their sense of direction. He makes the following suggestions:
·If you are using a map, turn it so it relates to the way you are facing.
·If you leave your bike in a strange place, put it near something like a big stone or a tree. Note landmarks on the route (路线) as you go away from your bike. When you return, go back along the same route.
· Simplify the way of finding your direction by using lines such as streets in a town, streams, or walls in the countryside to guide you. Count your steps so that you know how far you have gone and note any landmarks such as tower blocks or hills which can help to find out where you are.
