Should College Students Hire Cleaners?
Chinese families get materially better-off in recent years, but this naturally leads to college students having the implicit freedom to spend their money on whatever they desire, including hiring cleaners to keep their dorms clean. Students may argue that the time they save is spent on their studies. However, such a chain of reasoning is seriously flawed. Personally speaking, I stick to the belief that college students should not hire cleaners.
For one thing, managing dorms all by themselves instead of hiring cleaners can help them assume responsibilities for their own actions. When the dorm gets disorderly, it is its inhabitants who should get it tidy and clean. In performing the cleaning him/herself, a college student learns to share the responsibility for managing a public space of which one is a part. Generally speaking, cleaning one’s own dorm is a necessary process whereby one becomes a responsible person.
For another, hiring cleaners which is an excuse for avoiding physical labor is likely to restrict students’ comprehensive development. Chances are that college graduates can hardly be employed because they fail to acquire effective skills to solve practical problems. Consequently, I believe some sort of physical labor like cleaning dorms is necessary.
To sum up, I hold the view that college students should not hire cleaners to help them clean dorms. How could we expect Chinese college students to manage their work successfully, when they even refuse to mind their business of cleaning their dorms? Therefore, proper measures should be taken by school authorities to encourage students to clean dorms on their own.
