Who Should Be Our Superstars? If you ask a female student who is her favorite star, you can almost predict exactly her answer: one of the Korean TV heroes, popular singers, etc. For these superstars, they almost have an encyclopedic knowledge of them. They even save money and play truant to attend their concerts of games. However, elites in other fields obviously draw less attention. Few students can tell several names of prestigious college presidents. And few can brief the stories of Nobel Prize winners. Undoubtedly, these people are the backbones of your society who have make more concrete contributions to human development. This phenomenon should not be taken lightly. As one big shot said, “Tell me your hero and I can say what your future is like.” College students who want to be managers, political leaders, professors, should not follow suit and spend spare time indulging in( be obsessed with) popular star worship without careful consideration. My View on Credit Card for Students Following the cell phone and laptop, credit card has become increasingly popular among students, especially among college students. And some of them ever have more than one credit card. Is it necessary and good? The responses are quite diverse. Many people argue that most students are economically dependent on their parents, and do not have enough self-control. Therefore, they shouldn’t have the right to hold any credit card, or money would be ill-spent and their credit might be damaged. However, others hold that credit card will impose more sense of responsibility on the students, and more opportunities to be independent, or they would get into the real world without enough social experience. I share the opinion of the first group. The college students are too young to be entitled to any credit card, or it would be quite easy to be in hot water. But it’s acceptable with graduate students. Traffic Restrictions and Environment Protection So far, traffic restriction has been put into effect for more than one year in Beijing. And people do witness the changes. But as to its influence on the environment, no agreement has been reached yet. The following opinions have been popular among the people. Many (optimistic)people believe that traffic restriction brings evangel to the environment since it means fewer cars on the road, thus less waste gas and resource consumption. Some are pessimistic and want more radical regulations, because they consider the change is too minor. Still a small group of people have been fighting for some exact calculation between the positive effect to the environment and the inconvenience caused by the restriction. As for me, “Better small than never”. Since we have been aware of the seriousness of the situation, we should take up our responsibilities respectively: the government better public traffic system and the citizens follow the necessary regulations. Only in this way will the environment and traffic be upgraded together. A Notice for the Forthcoming Movie Show In order to enrich our spare time, we will project a series of popular movies sponsored by Star Show Cinema each weekend in September. The types will include adventures, love stories, scientific fictions, etc. This weekend’s show will be an adventure film called National Treasure. Ben Gates is the descendant of a family of treasure-seekers who have all hunted for a huge treasure. Though Ben’s forebears all failed, he now thinks he can make it. When Ben and his associates Ivan, Riley Poole and others find the clue pipe in the wreckage, which only leads them to another clue which is on the back of the Declaration of Independence, unexpected conflict arises among Ben and Ivan. What will become of Ben? The show starts at 19:00 on Saturday this week in Multimedia Room 507. Everyone is welcome. Student Union An Application for the Assistant Librarian Dear librarian, I saw your ad on the Library Board this morning and I am very interested in the post as an assistant librarian. My name is Jack and I am a sophomore in the Department of International Journalism. I come from the city of Tianjin. Currently, I am looking for a chance to enrich my spare time for I can finish my course assignment with ease. In last semester I have taken the computer course and get command of Microsoft Office and other useful software. As majoring in International Journalism, I think it is important for me to communicate with a variety of people. So I can put my communication skills acquired in class into practice and make many friends in the library. In addition, I am patient, open-minded and warm-heart, which I believe is the crucial requirement for this position. Thanks for your kind consideration. My dorm phone number is 010-12345678 and I’m looking forward to your early reply. Yours sincerely, Jack On Food Safety Issues While it is true that there is a decline in the number of cases related to fake foods and foods of poor quality, the safety of food remains a serious problem in this industry. Food-born diseases are largely responsible for high levels of sickness and mortality in the general public, particularly for infants, young children, and the elderly. There are various reasons for this heart-breaking fact. In my opinion, the responsibility goes for the most part to the food producers especially those who fail to meet safety standards. In order to make the most profit, some food producers may ever intentionally use such chemicals as pesticides, animal drugs, etc., during manufacturing and processing just to make food look or taste good. At the same time, the government departments responsible for quality control fail to fulfill their duties, which makes the danger turn into a reality. Besides, the media actually cheat the customers in their deliberate efforts to advertise the problematic food. To make sure the food we eat is safe, the supervision of food production should be highly responsible. What’s more, it is important for the government to drastically increase legal penalties on those who neglect food safety regulations. Nevertheless, the general public should be more aware that a healthy life relies on the safety of foodstuff. My View on Digital Media Digital media have been penetrating people’s life sweepingly, at a surprising speed, and through diverse channels such as Internet and cell phone. As a result, the function of digital media has definitely turned into a major topic for the public. Some people pay a tribute for their positive role as very convenient news sources, being available almost anywhere and any time. While some oppositely condemn the negative influence they have on privacy, on morality, and independent thinking people used to have and enjoy before these inventions. And still others have been fighting between the merits and demerits of digital media for a final conclusion. As for me, digital media unavoidably have both good and bad points. But the real power is in the hand of us human beings. The user always has the controlling power to let the advantages out, and keep the disadvantages remaining silent. Therefore, it is totally up to us. My View on Public Health We have witnessed the explosion of a few epidemics recently in different regions of the world, and even worldwide like the latest H1N1, which has thousands of patients globally and has caused quite many deaths, and both numbers are still swelling. What has caused these disasters? This has been confusing, but a few explanations do make some sense. First and foremost, the essentials people live on, like the air, the water, the food, have been changing dramatically all the time on account of the pollution, which has not only made human body vulnerable to the epidemic, but the abnormal climate as the breeding ground for the bacteria. To make the situation even worse, the mobility of population due to the speedy development of transportation and globalization has provided perfect carriers for any possible epidemic virus. In my point of view, the root of this worrying situation is the environment. Only when the environment really and truly follows the internal rhythm of the nature can this be really bettered back on the right track. 1. There is a growing tendency these days for many people who live in rural areas to come into and work in city. This problem has caused wide public concern in most cities all over the world. 2. An investigation shows that many emigrants think that working at city provide them with not only a higher salary but also the opportunity of learning new skills. 3. It must be noted that improvement in agriculture seems to not be able to catch up with the increase in population of rural areas and there are millions of peasants who still live a miserable life and have to face the dangers of exposure and starvation 4. Although rural emigrants contribute greatly to the economic growth of the cities, they may inevitably bring about many negative impacts. 5. Many sociologists point out that rural emigrants are putting pressure on population control and social order; that they are threatening to take already scarce city jobs, and that they have worsened traffic situation and public health problems. 6. It is suggested that governments ought to make efforts to reduce the increasing gap between cities and countryside. They ought to set aside an appropriate fund for improvement of the standard of peasants’ lives. They ought to invite some experts in agriculture to share their experiences, information and knowledge with peasants, which will contribute directly to the economic growth of rural areas. 7. In conclusion, we must take into account this problem rationally and place more emphases on peasants’ lives. Any government that is blind to this point will pay a heavy price. 1. This phenomenon has caused wide public concern in many places of world. 2. Many parents believe that additional educational activities enjoy obvious advantage. By extra studies, they maintain, their children are able to obtain many kinds of practical skills and useful knowledge, which will put them in a beneficial position in the future job markets when they grow up. Making children to be versatile will provide them with more opportunities in the future job hunting, which has become increasingly competitive. 3. In the first place, extra studies bring about unhealthy impacts on physical growth of children. Educational experts point out that, it is equally important to take some sport activities instead of extra studies when children have spent the whole day in a boring classroom. 4. Children are undergoing fast physical development; and lack of physical exercise may produce disastrous influence on their later life. 5. In the second place, from psychological aspect, the majority of children seem to tend to have an unfavorable attitude toward additional educational activities. 6. It is hard to imagine a student focusing their energy on textbook while other children are playing. 7. Moreover, children will have less time to play and communicate with their peers due to extra studies, consequently, it is difficult to develop and cultivate their character and interpersonal skills. They may become more solitary and even suffer from certain mental illness. 8. From what has been discussed above, we may safely draw the conclusion that, although extra studies indeed enjoy many obvious advantages, its disadvantages should not be ignored and far outweigh its advantages. It is absurd to force children to take extra studies after school. 9. Any parents should place considerable emphasis on their children to keep the balance between play and study. As an old saying goes, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. 1. Many leaders of government always go into raptures at the mere mention of artistic and cultural projects. They are forever talking about the nice parks, the smart sculptures in central city and the art galleries with various valuable rarities. Nothing, they maintain, is more essential than such projects in the economic growth. 2. But is it really the case? The information I have collected over last few years leads me to believe that artistic and cultural projects may be less useful than many governments think. In fact, basic infrastructure projects are playing extremely important role and should be given priority. 3. Some people who are in favor of artistic and cultural projects advocate that cultural environment will attract more tourists, which will bring huge profits to local residents. Some people even equate the build of such projects with the improving of economic construction. 4. Unfortunately, there is very few evidence that big companies are willing to invest a huge sums of money in a place without sufficient basic projects, such as supplies of electricity and water. 5. From what has been discussed above, it would be reasonable to believe that basic projects play far more important role than artistic and cultural projects in people’s life and economic growth. 6. Those urban planners who are blind to this point will pay a heavy price, which they cannot afford it. I wasn't born yesterday.(我又不是三岁小孩) 2. How do I address you?(我怎么称呼你) 3. She turns me off.(她使我厌烦。) 4. So far so good.(目前为止,一切都好。) 5. Be my guest.(请便、别客气) 6. That was a close call.(太危险了/千钧一发) 7. Far from it.(一点也不。) 8.
