21.(6分)At a time when almost anything can be purchased with just one click, it’s become an automatic response to simply replace what breaks. Generations raised in the earlier half of the 20th century will say that this wasn’t always so: household appliances(器具), clothing, electronics and more used to be bought under the assumption that, with the occasional repairs, they would last a lifetime.
Now, some conscientious consumers are taking matters into their own hands and joining the Repair Café movement. Founded in Amsterdam in 2009 by sewing expert Martine Postma, the original nonprofit has expanded to more than 1,20 locations worldwide. These pop-up events, which are run by volunteers, offer lessons in how to fix anything from fixing a button to an unresponsive laptop.
“There’s juice and treats and you get to meet new people,” says Bennett, a retired civil servant and volunteer fixer at the Repair Cafe Toronto, where she mends jewellery. She brings her own specialized tools but says most items could be repaired by anyone with a pair of pliers and some determination. “Something that is broken took time and resources to make, so if you’re throwing it out, you’re wasting those resources. ”
If you can’t find a Repair Cafe near you, it’s easy to start one. RepairCafe. org offers a starter manual with step-by-step instructions.
Changing how we acquire things is necessary, but there’s also something to be said for simply not getting them in the first place. “Most of us have more than what we need,” says Marina. “This can lead to a lot of anxiety, like—think about everything packed in the back of your closet; do you own those things or do they own you?” She suggests we train ourselves to make mindful purchases.
Lazarovic, whose delayed purchase went even further, explains that less shopping has freed up more time for family activities, dinner with friends and making art. By doing so, as she puts it, “I got out of that need-to-buy-it craze and in the end I feel good that I’ve made something.”
1、How would people raised in the 1940s deal with broken home appliances?
A.Sell them at a lower price. B.Press the button to find the fault.
C.Repair them to last longer. D.Donate them to recycling stations.
2、What does Bennett say about her work?
A.She likes the good food people bring for her work.
B.Helping make repairs means saving resources.
C.She will set up her own Repair Cafe soon.
D.She learned to repair jewels after she retired.
3、Which of the following best explains “conscientious” underlined in Paragraph 2?
A.Responsible. B.Generous.
C.Powerful. D.Irreplaceable.
4、What good does Lazarovic think less shopping will do to us?
A.It’ll make us less anxious about used things at home.
B.It’ll force us to make donations of unwanted things.
C.It’ll lead us to explore the world more responsibly.
D.It will provide us more time for beneficial events.
22.(8分) Breakdancing is set to make its first debut (亮相) as an Olympic sport at Paris 2024, Tony Estanguet, head of the Paris organizing committee, said on February 21st. Skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing, which have already been added to the programme for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, have been invited to return in Paris four years later.
Tony Estanguet said the choices responded to a need to make the Olympics “more urban” and “more artistic”. We have chosen to present the International Olympic Committee (IOC) with the four sports because they are creative, appealing to youth and completely in line with our vision. They reflect perfectly Paris 2024’s identity.
Breakdancing is an example of a sport “Which can be played anywhere and anytime in urban and other environment.” It appeared at the 2018 Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires in the form of head-to-head “battles”. In competitive breakdancing, “breakers” face off in “battles” against each other, either as individuals or teams. Breakdancers use a mix of physical and artistic skills combining elements from gymnastics or acrobatics (杂技).
The IOC had announced that the number of competitors at Paris 2024 would be restricted to 10, 500, which limited the opportunity to add sports. But the organizers said the inclusion of the four sports in Paris would not necessitate the construction of permanent facilities and would involve just 248 competitors, of which 32 would he in breakdancing. The surfing events are likely to be held in established surf centres such as Biarritz or Lacanau in southwest France.
The inclusion still need to be rubberstamped by the IOC, which is expected to decide on which sports to add in Paris after next years’ Tokyo Games.

A.Because they attract young people.
B.Because they perfectly reflect Paris’ identity

D.Because they can be played anytime and anywhere.
3、What can we learn from Paragraph 4?
A.10, 500 competitors will compete for the new sports.
B.More surf centers will be specially designed for Paris 2024.
C.The IOC will reject the proposal because of inadequate facilities.
D.The inclusion won’t require additional competition space to he built.
4、Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “rubberstamped” in the last paragraph?
A.approved B.canceled

23.(8分)We are enrolled in the full-time school called “life”. Every day in this school, we have opportunities to learn new lessons. No matter whether we like these lessons or not, we have to take them, because they are our lessons.
Why are we here in this world? What is the purpose of life? Humans have tried to discover the meaning of life for thousands of years, but failed to get the answer, because the meaning of life is different from person to person.
Each one of us has his or her special purpose and path, unique and different. As we travel on our life path, we will learn many great lessons in order to fulfill that purpose. Learning our lessons well is the key to discovering the real meaning of our own life.
As we travel through our lifetime, we may be taught hard lessons that others don't have to face, while others spend years struggling with problems we don’t need to deal with. We may never know why we love English, not physics, which indicates that our path is different. While traveling on our own path, sometimes alone, we should, first of all, take a basic lesson in openness.
Openness means being receptive. Life will present us with so many lessons, none of which are useful to us unless we can recognize them and are open to their values. These lessons arc not easy to learn, but we should regard them as gifts. But how can we recognize these lessons? It is a matter of what “glasses” we are wearing at the time. It is not difficult to spot them if we take them as opportunities. So when we are not open to learning our lessons, failing a weekly English test might be like a disaster rather than an opportunity to us. Of course, the hard lessons may not be fun, but they can actually be the biggest gifts we receive from life.
1、The author may be in favor of the viewpoint that all men are born .
A.equal B.different
C.to learn lessons D.ready for challenge
2、The example of “we love English, not physics" is mentioned to show that we .
A.choose our own path in life
B.need to face some hard lessons
C.discover the meaning of our own life
D.realize the necessity of openness
3、Whether we can see life lessons as gifts depends upon our .
A.angles of view
B.common value system
C.experiences from life
D.willingness to face challenge
4、What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Life and lesson B.Life as School
C.Life School and Students D.Gifts from Life
24.(8分)More than 135,000 UK drinkers will die from cancer caused by alcohol(酒精)by the year 2035, researchers say. Drinking too much will cause 7,100 cancer deaths a year by 2035, a rise of 13 percent on the present rate. A study by Sheffield University and Cancer Research UK shows that alcohol will cost the NHS(National Health Service) £53billion over the next ten years including £2 billion on cancer.
Although alcohol is known to cause many types of cancer including breast and throat most people don’t realize the relation between alcohol and cancer. A survey of 2,100 Britons by the researchers earlier this year found nine in ten did not associate drinking with cancer. The researchers used a computer model to work out the numbers of alcohol-related cancer deaths, hospital admissions(入院)and total costs to NHS over the next 20 years.
The study shows that a fifth of men and 1 in 10 women have alcohol every day---and many of these are middle-aged and middle class. Researchers are very worried about this group as they believe cancer may be caused by drinking over long periods. The study shows that even if the expense stays as it is, alcohol-related cancer deaths will rise from 6,299 in 2015 to 7,097 in 2034. Alcohol will lead to 891, 299 hospital admissions, up from 802, 118 in 2015, and 65, 005 will be caused by cancer.
Earlier this year Chief Medical Officer Dame Sally Davies studied carefully the alcohol guidelines(指导方针)for the first time in thirty years. She told people there was no safe level of drinking and advised them to drink no more than 14 units a week. But researchers say this guidance isn’t enough and want the government to increase a little price per unit of alcohol.

25.(10分)Dodder is an unusual and unwanted plant that attacks other plants. Except for its flowers, the plant looks like spaghetti, a kind of noodles in the shape of long thin pieces that look like string when they are cooked. Its almost leafless, thread-like stems(茎)hang down on top of other plants that dodder needs to stay alive. Dodder does not produce its own food. Instead, it steals food from other plants. It feeds by sucking juices from the plant which is wrapped around, often making its host very weak or even killing it.
Dodder can find other plants by their smell. When a young dodder plant starts growing, it follows the smell of plants it prefers, like tomato plants, potato plants, or other farm crops. Unlike most plants that usually grow in the direction of light or warmth, a dodder plant will grow in the direction of, for example, tomato smell-if a tomato happens to be growing nearby.
However, a young dodder plant must find a host plant quickly. It no longer needs its root once it is attached to the host and wrapped around it. If it cannot catch a smell of a potential host within a few days, it will dry up and disappear-even
