It is based at Broadcasting House in London. The BBC is controlled by some governors chosen by the government, but these people have freedom and the government can’t interfere(干扰).That is , the BBC is supposed not to be the mouthpiece(代言人)of the government. It has to be as fair as possible in giving radio and television time to, for example, political parties and religious(宗教)groups. There is a kind of interesting service in British-rental services. Many people prefer to rent(租用)their television sets instead of buying them. The rent for a black and white set is about 80 pence a week (1980). The rent of a color set is more than twice that of a black and white set. If the sets go wrong, people can have them repaired free of charge or replaced immediately. Everyone has to buy a yearly licence, since there is no advertising on BBC radio or television. It is from the sale of licences that the BBC gets most of its money. A licence for a black and white set costs 8 pounds, and for a colour set 18 pounds a year. There are four specialized radio channels, which broadcast different kinds of programmes. Radio 1 is mainly pop music. Radio 2 deals with light music, sports and other programmes. Radio 3 broadcasts serious music, talks on serious subjects etc. News broadcasts are mainly given by Radio 4. There are special programmes for Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and certain parts of England. It also broadcasts programmes about Britain—in many different languages as well as in English to all parts of the world. 56. The officials in charge of the BBC________________. D. it costs more to rent a color TV set than a black and white one B How men first learned to invent words is unknown; in other words, the origin of language is a mystery. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined(结合)to represent those sounds and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, we call words. The power of words, then, lies in their associations(联系)— the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall(回想)to us the glad and sad events of our past and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something to us increases. Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal(吸引)powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming and telling use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music, and which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should, therefore, learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech silly and vulgar (粗鄙). 60. The origin of language is_______________. A. a saying handed down from the past B. a matter that is hidden or secret C. a question difficult to answer D. a problem not yet solved 61. Which of the following is NOT true about words? A. Powerful words are closely associated. B. Words mean little to those without experience. C. Certain words mean more to us when we grow older. B. Words in proper combination bring up meaning before our minds. 62. The more we read and learn, ____________. A. the more meaning the words carry B. the more meaningful words we have C. the more we want to learn words D. the more clever we become 63. “Literary style” in the last paragraph refers to ____________. A. how writers use words to appeal to our minds and feelings B. how writers tell us the different uses of words C. how great thoughts are generated D. how charming great writers are C Did your mother spend years urging you to marry a doctor, a lawyer, a professional of some sort? If so, she may have been giving you better advice than you thought. Not only will a professional man provide for you well-it turns out he's more likely than other husbands to help with the housework. That's one of the findings in the recent survey of men and housework carried out by sociologist(社会学家)William Beer and reported in his book Househusbands. Because men in the professions are freer to set their own house, they have the time and energy to do more housework. Other contributing(起作用的)factors are whether his wife works (in which case his share will go up a good deal) and whether his father helps around the house (in which case he will, too). Older men like to do the shopping, younger men the cooking, but the differences stop there. And men find housework as boring as women do: The more years a man has been doing housework, the less he's likely to do. 64. What is the purpose of the passage? A. To tell the reader how to do housework. B. To make a comparison between men and women C. To show a professional man is less likely to do housework D. To describe what kind of men are more likely to do housework 65. William Beer's findings are based on_________. A. his impressions B. other people's opinions C. his imagination D. facts 66. What conclusion did the author draw? A. Husbands find housework boring when they're been doing it for a long time B. Professional men are the same as other husbands in doing housework C. Wives can do housework well even though they find it boring. D. Young girls like to help with the housework 67. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage? A. A professional man can support his wife by giving her more money and the things. B. Now older men and younger men have few differences between them C. A professional man is more intelligent so he can do more housework. D. A professional man's father is more likely to help with housework D Maybe ten-year-old Elizabeth put it best when she said to her father, “But, Dad, you can't be healthy if you're dead.” 6 W9 d6 E6 y9 q; ]% e   k4 b- C5 x9 ~.
